I have retired my first Strat due to fret wear after 20+ years. The wear certainly hasn't rendered it unplayable but there probably isn't enough fret depth for a complete re-level and crown. There are divots in the higher string frets by the nut but, as I tend to bend and vibrato a lot, the majority of the frets are just flattened. If I was still playing it I might consider re crowing the frets but it is far from unplayable.

hi
i guess it's question of fret size , i'm sure your guitar uses jumbo frets

What I am trying to say is, Fender frets wear but (at least to me) it isn't a big issue. Perhaps they do wear more than other guitars but perhaps they sound different or don't kill strings in the same way other guitars do.

i have played with a stainless guitar , and i can't hear the difference
i played great and bending strings are really easy
thanks

With all this stainless love I was starting to think where is the advantage in nickle. It then occurred to me that I do experience some fret sprout here in the UK. With nickle a gentle stoning down the edge of the neck and touching the tips with the crowning file is all it takes to cure it. With stainless that would be somewhat more of an issue.

I imagine stainless steel frets might produce a more brittle sound. That might be fine on a Les Paul with muddy mellow tones to spare but I would anticipate this might push a Strat over the edge of brightness?

I've run stainless strings and the only difference in tone is they last longer i.e. they sound "new" longer, but there is very little difference when new.
And I would expect strings to have a greater impact on tone than frets.
Notice that there is no tonal difference on open chords between a guitar with a zero fret, bone nut, graphtech, or plastic nut.

Probably not. 20 years would be around 1998. Fender currently uses Jumbo only on the American Special model. Some of the Classic series use narrow/tall and vintage.
I don't recall a lot of chatter in the 90s about jumbo frets on factory guitars. In the 70s and 80s, people used to talk about having their frets shaved for faster action.

I would agree that something is wrong if you are seeing fret wear after only a year. Either you play A LOT, or the guitar was misrepresented when you bought it and it's actually older than you were told.
Please try to post some pictures of the fret wear. Is it irregular, and concentrated where you play a lot, or all over the neck?

The only time I've ever experienced fret wear that concerned me was also my first guitar. It was a cheap ($100) Korean plywood Les Paul copy, and the frets seemed to wear as if they were brass.
