Interesting but nothing major imo. Maybe a fault(crack, knot, weather spot) in the wood that they tried to coverup that they didn't see before it got to the finishing stage. It doesn't look like it would interfere w/ playing, just a cosmetic blemish. Could it be more than skin deep, yeah sure maybe, but there's no way to tell for sure.

Normal for brand new guitar ? I would not buy a brand new guitar with that.

You did not see that at store before going to home ?

I get the feeling that is was a clearout bargain from an internet vendor (was it a Fender authorised one?) - OP says it's an American Standard.
The neck blemish is one of those things that you get when you use tree wood (is there any other sort?) and should have been pulled by QC.
The blemish is unlikely to be a sign of something more serious.
If the OP is unhappy they should contact the vendor and come to an arrangement

Thanks for sorting the pictures.

To me it looks like something was nailed to the tree or board and the nail eventually rusted away. If it had been a dead branch stick or something of that nature I would expect some deviation in the grain around the mark.

While it may not effect the integrity of the neck it isn't right and shouldn't really be on a finished full price guitar IMHO. If it was sold as a second then all well and good.

Yet another thread regarding Fender Quality Control - Those boys need to sort themselves out.

That is pretty much how I see it as well.
In the Spring, Summer, and Fall I enjoy a LOT of campfires in my back yard, so I'm cutting and splitting wood constantly....I have seen what nails and staples leave behind in the wood, and those pictures look just like it.
