I bought my American Strat at Guitar Center. As I was leaving I noticed that the trem bar wasn't included. The salesman opened a drawer and fished around through dozens of trems till he found one that fit. Apparently there are a variety of thread size/pitches that vary from model to model. Long story short - mine does the same thing - so it's not unusual if not "normal".

Don't stess man. Here's what you want to do. Take a SMALL amount of vaseline (grease would be the preferred substance) and LUBE THE THREADS. Make sure the trem arm is ALL THE WAY IN and at the PROPER ANGLE before you start to make your turns. I had this problem with one of my Strats. The previous owner had the trem block resting on the body of the guitar. I usually leave the 1/8th" gap factory set up. Something as minor as this can cause confusion, and disaster, if you force it and strip those threads. Be really careful with this. If you still can't get it to tighten easily, I would taken to my local shop. Most shop owners will be glad to help and can probably "get 'er done" for you in a couple minutes. Hope this helps.

No, I've got a "pop in - pop out" trem bar.

Is this a new guitar? Did it work OK and then start this?

Do the threads look OK on the trem bar? If they look OK you could try to chase the threads in the trem block. A shop would probably do this very cheaply and quickly.

Back in the 70s I had a Strat that the tremolo bar stripped anyway. They strip real easy. I just screwed it in until I felt it getting tight and backed off a turn. Fender recommends always removing the tremolo bar everytime you put your guitar back into the case. If you keep removing and putting back on your going to strip the threads anyway. I never removed it and just put it back in my case with it on. It was just lowered a little bit when the case was closed. It's a no win situation. The bar stripped anyway. One day it just kept turning & turning & turning, but like I said if you keep taking it out and putting it back in everytime you put your guitar back into it's case, your going to strip it anyway. Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple was constantly breaking his tremelo bars so he had a guy install a kickstand for a tremelo bar! (laughs) :D
