I have a 1974 Strat, and the tremolo bar screws in solid but does not get tight. I took it to the shop and they were like “just drop a spring in and it will tighten up” but they put it in and it went too deep. Is there another spring I can get for it? Is this right? Is there another method to tighten it up?

Are you sure the "shop "put the right spring ? I guess not .

Why the tech at the "shop" can't fix it ?

The "Mazak" (Zamak) junk they cast the bridge from may have stripped out.
I stripped my '78

On Zamac bridges, the trem arm hole goes all the way through the bridge and is open on the bottom. A spring will just fall through and rattle around in the spring cavity.
----------------------
An old trick to tighten up a screw-in arm is to wrap the arm's thread with teflon tape. ("Plumber's tape", "thread sealing tape").

Any hardware store has it. Walmart too. It's super thin and has no adhesive. Hold the end against the thread, then pull the spool and stretch it as you wrap it around. 2 or 3 times.

It shreds a bit each time you insert/remove the guard. So you have to re-wrap occasionally. But it's cheap and 1 roll will last many years.
