Hi there,

I might have the opportunity to buy a Fender strat from '77 with an upgraded pickguard: Fender Fullerton Dan Smith Strat loaded pickguard from 1982. Besides that, the bridge saddles, string trees and nut are replaced by a graphtec set.

What would you say is the value of this guitar? The price is €1300.

Thanks in advance!

If it was 100% 1977 Fender Stratocaster...maybe...with all those "upgrades"; not for me. Guitars are worth more in their original form.
I asked the folks at Zippo Lighter Company once how much certain lighters in my collection were worth, and they told me "whatever a collector is willing to pay".

Ya... Price is in the ballpark given the higher prices in the EU, but personally I'd not spend more than €1000, where completely original or just the Zamak saddles replaced, I might go €1800

So how much are you willing to pay for a matched 77 neck and body is really what you are saying.

Considering the 70's guitars weren't Fenders finest hour I would say it is very much down to how good you consider it to be and how much you want it compared to any other new or used Strat of a similar price.

70's Strats don't float my boat and I am finding having guitars just because they might be considered of some historic interest is a pain. You don't want to get rid of them but if they aren't a guitar you want to pick up and play what is the point?

For £/$1300 there are an absolute host of Strats out there that will be better in every way except they aren't 40 years old. It is up to you if you consider being old is worth the premium.

So it's about £1175 (converting it over)? No way would I give that for a 70's Strat when there isn't much left of it that's original! Mind you, having owned a '70's Strat, I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole anyway.

Agree with John - if it's worth it to YOU, then fine. Who are we to criticise? But even over this side of the pond, you could have your pick for that kind of money...

Cheers - Peter.

Good points all.
The 70s Fender products were not THAT good, even with hardware upgrades.
For that kind of money, you can get a new MiA guitar or two MiM with warranty.

Just because a guitar is old does not make it good.
70s became desirable for collectors only after the older models were removed from the market (by collectors).
One has to wonder why a 50 year old guitar is still in great condition... perhaps nobody *wanted* to play it?

+1

Possibly because it was so shoddily constructed that no amount of turd polish would render it playable......?

I agree with the previously-expressed sentiments -- the instrument is over-priced given its modified condition and the only reason I'd ever consider such a guitar is if it were in great cosmetic shape, didn't need a re-fret, and came with the original HSC. Assuming those stipulations were met, I'd offer $1150 to $1200 but no more.
