Iffin It's a Fender it's good!

My suggestion is to go to a music store or two and check out all the ones in your price range. Find the one that speaks to you.

A fender one.

seriously what grabs your fancy?
metal, country, pop, the possibilities are endless. As is your level of experience in music, i.e your not going to go from playing a custom shop jazz bass or warwick to a chinese squire telecaster very easily.

Give us some more info about your circumstances please mate

It depends on what you want to spend. The Squire models are a great option and there a good many different styles to choose from. But, if you are willing to spend a bit more, go for a Fender Standard (Made in Mexico MIM). Good Luck

I prefer strats. But you should hit the stores and check them all out. Besides.......that's all part of the fun........lookin' and tryin'.

ok i'd start by trying a few mexican standard strats and their various options of pickup configuration. I'd say they or prs are the world leader in serious mid/low priced guitars.
If your an acomplished bass player with a good grasp on the fingerboard, save up the extra dough look at the american made strats. particularly the ones with S1 switching that should give you a plethoria of sounds and cover all the tones you like.

I hear so much about the Highway one strats. How are they as far as tone and playability?

Never had the pleasure of playing one, butI have it on very good authority that they are excellent guitars. A mate of mine has one, adores it and sneers at my vintage hotrod claiming 'its nothing more than a mish mash of bits fender had kicking about the place.'
I dont think playability is a issue with modern guitar manufacture. Even the real bad companies make guitars you can get your fingers round alright. The general rule with fender is 'the more you pay, the better you get'. I dont think fender produce a bad playing guitar, some thing thats totaly horrible. Saying that theres nothing on the planet thats going to play better for you than a neck you've had, looked after and played the hell out of for years.

Sounds to me like you've already researched the highway1 a bit, so take it for a test drive. It'll either do what you want it to or it won't. You won't know until you play and hear it.

Great well youre right about playability because I have a 7-string bass that I play no problem because of long fingers but Im more worried about the fret size because I dont know whats best

This is just my opinion...
Keep in mind that a nice fitting shoe to me could be a foot ache to you.
With that said, lets talk about a well fitting shoe.
The body of the fender stratocaster. If u take a moment to sit with it.
Stand with it... lay down on the sofa or in a bed with it.
This guitar set a standard for many reasons.
The body of a strat can be cuddled with... lol
It's a nice fitting shoe to almost anyone that holds it.

Telecasters are great guitars... but for me it is a Stratocaster!

My opinion: buy a MIM strat in HSS configuration.
You'll have a wider range of tonal variation. Single coils
for clean/jazz/blues, and a humbucker for rock/metal.
Inspect the neck for the one that is the smoothest, this
is where i've seen most of the quality variation on MIM's.
Pick the one WITHOUT rough edges on sides of neck where
the frets grooves were cut.

My Highway One plays and sounds like a 1970 (or so) Strat, IMO.
Big headstock, four-bolt neck, vintage bridge --- no frills, basic USA Strat.
Like those good old days from 1969-1971.

I would get an MIM (made in mexico) Strat, simply because it's an inexpensive instrument but it's still a quality product. If you ever want to modify it, there are plenty of options, and you can do it financially because the stock instrument itself isn't very expsensive.

I would also suggest a Telecaster, but I don't know what the MIM ones are like. If you get a Telecaster, get a Highway 1; it may be more expensive but it's a good price being American made
