Hey guys.. been searching for a diagram for weeks. Nothing applies to my guitar build and it's driving me insane lol... Maybe you can help me out?

I've got a 2000 Am. Dlx. Fat Strat HSS and the (stock) super switch crapped out on me. While I'm in there replacing it I'd like to do a couple minor mods. I want to change the 3 position (middle PUP only) to neck and bridge PUPs only (no middle), and I'd like to add a s-1 switch (on the volume pot) so that when I push it in it splits the humbucker. I've already got the new super switch (it's a Oak Grigsby one) and I already have the S-1 volume pot assembly. I just need to figure out how to wire it up, and the way my guitar is wired from the factory is really... "different". I even contacted Fender CSR and they basically told me they had no idea why I had 1MEG pots for tone, or why there was a cap and a res on my volume pot (ended up being a treble bleed, but I learned that elsewhere).

Here's the schematics for my guitar so you know exactly what I'm up against:

https://p4.zdassets.com/hc/theme_assets ... C_SISD.pdf

I'd like to change the 5 way switch to where:
5: Neck
4: Neck/Middle
3: Neck/Bridge
2: Middle/Bridge
1: Bridge

and rig up the S-1 switch so that it'll split the humbucker in any position the humbucker is engaged.

A couple people have said splitting the bucker is uneventful from a tone perspective, and I'm better off having the switch change it from series to parallel, but I don't know if that's even more of a pain in the butt or not... so I'm sticking with this for now.

if anyone can help me out with this diagram before like Sunday I would greatly appreciate it. My guitar has been firewood for two weeks now and I'm losing my mind lol

Thanks a million in advance!

Brian

Hi & welcome to the forum.

Well, "before like Sunday" on the forum is very optimistic - there is a first post delay (sometimes close to two weeks) etc...
And sadly, the forum at the moment lacks input from the real wiring gurus (sending once again a kind thought to the fourth rock...) who could in an instant draw any diagram someone needed.

I'm absolutely not a wiring wizzard, so proceed with caution. First, why an S1 for coil splitting? IMHO, a push-pull pot or a mini switch might be easier to install (and possibly more reliable).
Anyways, here's a Schaller diagram for their Megaswitch E, showing the wiring for the positions you want, maybe it will get you a bit further: https://schaller.info/en/megaswitch-e

Holy smokes it finally got approved... Yeah, I had no idea it would take up to TWO WEEKS to post? That's just unreasonable. lol...

Anyway, I've got a (very) few answers on a couple other forums... and I'm no longer coil splitting. Reviews are not great for that mod on my guitar... However, I'd like to use the s-1 as a series/parallel button for the bridge bucker. The original wiring of this guitar had this going on:

5 - Neck
4 - Neck/ Middle
3 - Middle
2 - Middle / Bridge Humbucker in PARALLEL
1 - Bridge Humbucker in SERIES

(this finally answers my question as to why it even came with a super switch from the factory)

Now I've figured out how to wire the 5 way to change position 3 to Neck / Bridge (and keep tone pots etc as is)

BUT

I want to use the S-1 to switch the bridge humbucker between series and parallel, instead of wiring the super switch like it was and having the selection be permanent.

Anyone know how I can wire up an S-1 so that my humbucker is in parallel normally and series when pushed in? I know I could alternatively get a DPDT but I don't want to drill my pickguard, and I already have the S-1.

My bridge humbucker always has green wire grounded to a tone pot... so on the S-1:

For parallel: I need black to ground, red and white are parallel outputs
For series: White and Black are connected, red is series output.

How do I wire that on a S-1?

Thanks for any help in advance...

Brian

I saw that but it's for split coils... and I don't understand why he still has a wire going directly from the humbucker to the 5-way when I thought you could do it through the S-1 alone?

Man this is rough...

I've got a guy helpin me on TGP but I'm starting to feel like a bother with all my technical questions lol...

Sure wish a wiring magician would see this ; ;

Thanks
Brian

The humbucker is basically two single coils, normally in series.
The "hot" from Coil-1 would go to the 5-way, the "ground" from Coil-1 goes to the "hot" of Coil-2, then the "ground" from Coil-2 goes to the guitar's ground.

To "split" the coils and emulate a single coil, you connect the "ground" from Coil-1 (and the "hot" of Coil-2) to ground. This shorts out the 2nd coil and leaves only a single coil.

To switch between series/parallel, you take the connection from Coil-1 to Coil-2, break it, and connect Coil-1 to ground, and Coil-2 to the hot from Coil-1.

The coil split alone is super easy, since you are just applying a ground to the connection between Coil-1 and Coil-2.

So, you originally wanted "normal" Strat wiring with the option to split the 'bucker using the S1. That's super simple.
It's more complex if you want the #2 "slot" switch position to parallel the 'bucker with itself and the middle pickup, as that requires the change in the connection between the two coils.

UNLESS... We are misunderstanding, and what you actually want is what you asked for in the original post:
5 - Neck
4 - Neck/ Middle
3 - Middle
2 - Middle / Bridge in parallel with each other (but the 'bucker in series with itself)
1 - Bridge Humbucker
^^^^^ This is super simple and is basically normal Strat wiring. Adding the S1 (or a toggle, or P-P pot) give the option of splitting the 'bucker's coils.

To have the coil tap and switch between series/parallel on the 'bucker would require a 2nd S1 switch, or it may be possible to do it with a Superswitch... but it may produce an unwanted effect if you are in the parallel 'bucker configuration and then hit the coil tap.

Nice info! I think I got it figured out...

I did want the switching options from my original post:
Neck
Neck Middle
Neck Bridge
Middle Bridge
Bridge

But decided to go with an S-1 to switch the bridge humbucker between parallel and series (instead of my original idea to coil tap it).

I wired up the super switch so all poles were connected... Then used pole 1 for bridge PUP (single wire from S-1 instead of all the humbucker wires) on lugs 1-3, pole 2 for neck PUP on lugs 3-5, pole 3 for tones (neck tone lug 5, bridge tone lug 1-4), and pole 4 for middle PUP on lugs 2 and 4 with a jumper.

I ran all four bridge humbucker wires into the S-1 so that with the button not pressed, the bridge stays parallel (black and green grounded, red and white are outputs) and with the button down it's in series (green still grounded, black connects to white, red is output in series). This is for a Fender DH-1 humbucker.

For the S-1:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/eONiX ... 60-h720-rw

I ran:

1A = red in + wire out to bridge PUP lugs on 5-way
1C = white in
2A = black in
2C = green in + ground out to X
jumper 2A to 1B

X - Ground from jack, bent to pot shell, connected to main ground
Y - White wire to jack
Z - Input from 5-way switch common

It all works and sounds awesome! Glad i went with series/parallel instead of the coil split. And with the S-1 it's invisible. Love it. Highly recommend. Basically I have a bridge gain boost and more options at 3&4 positions, but kept everything I liked to begin with.
