Hi all,

I just got a used american professional strat. I think it's a 2017 or 2018 and looks to have been hardly played.
Just put some new strings on it last night and went to adjust the truss rod, and discovered the truss rod adapter didn't feel right. It feels like there is nothing much in there for the allen key (that came in the pack with the guitar) to grab on to. I did manage to adjust it a bit, but it felt like the allen key would slip.

Shining a light down there, it almost looks like there is no nut, or it's filled up with something. How far should the allen key usually be inserted into the adjuster?

I've tried to take a picture but I can't see an option to attach one here.

There is no truss rod adapter. Did you mean Allen key , or truss rod nut ?

You need a 1/8" allen key and the minimum lenght inside the truss rod hole is 5/8 "

You should use a quality too witch must fit tight on the nut,. Previous owner may ruin nut with wrong tool. If you are not sur show your guitar to a luthier, he will see in few minutes what is wrong

First you need to upload your pics to the internet. From a great forum member ; Jmattis

Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb, flickr or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.

The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' and ending in '.jpg'.

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

You can see inside the wood plug a part of the truss rod nut

"Filled up" happens sometimes. Sawdust, wax, polishing compound, dirt & gunk, sometimes gets stuck in the socket and keep the wrench from going in alk the way.

And to make it easier to insert the wrench in through that blind hole, they made the socket flared -- it's a little bigger on the open end and the wrench only makes firm contact when it's inserted all the way.

So if there's a little crud stuck in the bottom of the socket, the proper size wrench will be loose.
***********
Straighten out a paper clip, poke it into the socket, scrape it around. Then hold the guitar upside down (so the adjuster hole is pointing down to the ground) and shake it a bit to get the crud out.

Test with wrench. Repeat until the wrench goes in far enough to feel firm.

(It doesn't have to be a paper clip -- whatever improvised tool you can come up with.)

I prefer using a can of compressed "computer air" to evacuate debris from a small orifice -- easier on my arms and less hazardous to the guitar.

With paper clip or needle you can't damaged the nut
