HI,
New to the forum and I have a question.
I recently purchased a used MIM Sunburst Strat and I am not sure what body wood it has. I know at one time some of the MIM bodies were poplar and not alder. The serial number is MN9xxxxxx which indicates it was made late 1999/ early 2000. Does anyone know if Fender had discontinued using poplar on MIM Strats by this time?

Thanks!

Looking at The Blue book of guitars they say it is Poplar. What color is it?

I was just checking unless the book is wrong it is Poplar but you no you cant believe everything you read. I have a lot of the catologs going back to the late 80's have to ask my son what he did with them. The Info I have now came from the Blue Book of Guitars 10 Anniv. Edition by Zachary Fjested

The newer ones that I've seen are made of alder, but using more pieces during the construction.

"Alder is light in weight with soft tight pores like Basswood. But there is a large swirling grain pattern to it with harder rings and sections. So imagine a Basswood type texture but with harder rings peppered throughout. That adds to the stiffness, and the complexity of the tones. It retains more of the highs that Basswood softens, but also gives some room to the lows. You have a broader spectrum of tones, which leads to the perception of a little less mids than Basswood."

Read page on MIM Standard Models on this site. It tell you body material used on STD MIM Strat after 1991 then change made in 2002 Alder
