I'm the new proud owner of an Eric Clapton Artist signature "Blackie" strat with a maple fingerboard.

I'm always reading that you shouldn't use lemon oil or Fast Fret on guitars with maple fingerboards. I get that, when the fingerboard is lacquered — it will just sit on the glossy surface and make a horrible sticky mess.

And I see other people saying they've done it for years with no ill effects!

However the Clapton Strat fingerboard doesn't appear to be finished in the same way — it appears almost plain wood, although I suspect it has been dressed with something.

My question is: can I safely use Fast Fret to clean the strings on this guitar?

I don't want to put anything on the fingerboard as such, merely to clean the strings (as I have very sweaty hands and the strings go black very quickly if I don't wipe them down after I play), but it's inevitable that some Fast Fret will go on the fingerboard when I clean the strings.

Will it do any harm?

Thanks,

Tim

It will not harm the finish of the Maple fretboard...just wipe it completely dry every time you clean the strings.
Slide a lint-free cloth between the strings and fretboard, and shammy the fretboard like you're shining shoes.

The neck has a Satin Urethane finish, which spells out as they-sprayed-it-thinner-than-glossy and they-did-not-polish-it.
But still, there is a PU finish layer.
