hey guys, it’s been a while.
How is everyone?
So I had been playing with the idea to relic my Strat.
I have wanted a CS Relic Stratocaster but couldn’t justify spending 3 to 4 k on one.
My hr 62 Strat has nitrocellulose finish and decided to jump in with both feet.
Here is my progress so far.

A bold move and not something I would have considered on such a valuable instrument.

There is a fine line between what looks like authentic wear and tear and what looks like deliberate vandalism. The trick is not to cross the line. Every mark should have a reason and pictures of authentic old worn guitars are like gold. The difficulty is finding authentic worn guitars to copy. There is no point in copying other fake old guitars as it becomes Chinese Whispers and is easier to cross over the vandalism line.

I actually used John frusciante’s Strat as inspiration.
It took a long time to decide on this.
I’m very happy with the results.
This guitar Is my keeper guitar. I don’t look at this guitar as an investment I look at it more as an inspiration for music.
It’s not for everyone, but for me, it’s perfect.

Just sharing In case someone else wants to do this, at least some crazy mofo did it.

Here is the final result of the body.

Looks like you’re coming along good on the relicing there BST. I reliced an Olympic White Mexican Stratocaster a few years ago, wish I had pics to show you. I rusted up all the parts and everything, looked pretty old when I got done with it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the process and outcome.
Do u still have the white one?
Did you strip the poly and nitro it prior to relic, or did you relic the poly?
Curious to see what process you used

A friend is gonna pay me to Relic his.

You would have loved my Road Worn, butchered by the previous owner, which I tried to get to a believable state.

I wasn't happy with it though so refinished it.

And don't forget the check the lacquer

and age all the metalwork

At 1st glance, yes.
The arm rest area, I would’ve sanded down fading off the paint underneath the sunburst.
Love the daphne blue refinish with light relicing.

I love when the custom shop does a sunburst heavy relic then repaints it red or blue then relics it bringing out the underneath sunburst finish.

But the whole thing is asking yourself how and why would it be worm in any particular area. I spent hours studying how I held and manipulated the guitar. What the differences were between playing the guitar standing up and sitting down. What happens when you pick the guitar up, hang it around your neck, put it down etc. If I, the lead, the case, a belt, a ring, or something else didn't touch the body consistently in any particular location there was no reason for it to be worn or marked there. Damage through accident, knocks, dents, chips etc. are far more random but contact abrasion has to be as a result of frequent contact.

I am quite pleased in the way the damage has changed on my guitar purely through use. The wear points have enlarged but exactly where I put them and the only way I know they have changed is colour I added to the exposed wood initially is now like a tide mark where more wood has been revealed through use.

I understand, through hearsay, that Custom Shop has studded belts, buckles, straps etc. just to replicated what happens to a guitar played by someone wearing such an item.

I wanted my guitar to look like I had owned it. I don't create pick rash above the pick guard although I appreciate that there are guitarists who do. It was this detail which annoyed me the most and prompted the refinish. It isn't perfect and there are areas that annoy me as I struggle to find a legitimate reason for them. I am now torn though as it develops its own legitimate damage which I would have to destroy in order to remove the marks I am unhappy with.

Either way, there is little to beat the freedom a battered guitar brings you when you stop being upset by the dings nicks and dents which are inevitable on a music making tool. My relic is one of the cheapest in my collection but still one of my favourites. Everyone should have at least one relic.

I totally agree with you on the amount of “wear”, it’s hard to believe that from normal use paint would fade off like that. I just think it looks really cool. Plus I can’t stand to have idle hands, hahaha.
I make gun holsters, leather and kydex. I add patina effect to already expensive knives, by removing coating etc..
With guitars, one of my favorites is the Rory Gallagher Strat. Has more wood than paint, it’s a work of art imho. Of course I didn’t want to copy another Strat, so I added the wear little by little to the areas I wanted to see “aged” and faded.
This guitar has always been my #1.

Cheers

When are you going to finish the job?
It's weird looking at brand new and shiny chromework, complete with factory stickers on the neckplate, along with plastics that are squeaky clean and new.
That looks like a fashion statement, and a dubious one at that.
You should have played the guitar like you stole it off someone, and the wear and tear would have at least been genuine.

As you may have guessed, I'm not a fan of wrecking perfectly good guitars, but only doing half the job makes thinks look even more suspect.

+1!

That jack plate and bridge shine brighter than my Rolex and the pickguard reminds me of brand-new PVC tubing at Home Depot.

As it stands right now, I rate it as an epic fail.

I’m getting to it, working crazy hours on call at the hospital.
Dubious Fashion Statement, I’m gonna steal that for the name of my band..
Hahaha.

You will have to take them off the guitar to stand any sort of chance of doing them properly. A case tumbler or stone polisher is a good way to scuff up the surfaces prior to applying hydrogen peroxide. Or, once scuffed put in a sealed container with superglue.
