so my Jazzmaster, less than 18 months old, is cutting out in the upward switch position - other positions are fine. It will either be totally cut out, or at normal volume, and it is randomly intermittent.

Does this mean time to change the switch, and should this be happening this early on? I am a little disappointed if so.

Sorry for the very late answer - your post seems to have fallen a victim of the forum's 'fighting spam by delaying first posts until inspected' policy.

As far as the switch problem goes, that is not normal but sometimes gidgets just are defective.
It could be just a cold/breaking solder joint, not the actual switch breaking.
In many countries, your guitar would still be covered by warranty at 18 months from purchase, so check that road first.
But even if you have to cough up the money for a new switch and installment by a pro, it should be relatively cheap.

The switch you have is this on and see here;

You may try to polish contact with a dollar bill, yes a dollar paper bill is just fine. Don't use file it will destroy the contact.
If you can't, replace the switch with a good quality one ; Switchraft

By the way you are in " Stratocaster" forum . :lol:
You are lucky, I never go on "All other fender guitars" forum .

The forum search finds 273 posts from you on that "all other Fender guitars" section you never go to... 8)

Anyways, the OP got (very late, but anyways...) help on the wrong forum, and I'm sure if he returns, he'll know the forum ways better. :lol:
