Have you seen these knobs, John?

As for pickup covers, an antique creme color might favor your body's gorgeous finish.

I hadn't seen those knobs. I had seen some all wood knobs but I am thinking it could all get a bit fussy. I am still semi tempted by gold knobs but the numbering on the Strat knobs is so convenient, compared to the guess work of the Tele knobs, so I am still on the fence.

Funny you should mention the antique white/creme covers. I do a have a spare set and did mock it up with them. I even tried with creme front and back and black in the middle to give a Tele vibe.

Colour wise it did look really good. I didn't go with it though as three creme covers made it look too much like a conventional Strat and a mixture looked contrived.

The all black look is growing on me the more I look at it as it all blends into one so you aren't aware of the PUPs to a degree. I regret that the knobs have white lettering, not gold, but that is how Fender make them and life is far too short to repaint all the numbers.

I rather like the contrast of the gold screws as it gives it a bit of a Steam Punk sort of vibe.

I have a hankering for a set of Lace Sensors which would look the absolute nuts in black. Would you believe they also do them in Chrome but not gold. Otherwise, I might go with a gold frame, as per the link above, just for the neck PUP.

Not really that difficult or time-consuming. Typically it only takes me about two hours or so. Grab some gold leaf Testors or Humbrol model paint and give it a go. Bet it'll look swell.

Ooooh Gold leaf, I never thought of that. Perhaps I had better get another set of knobs to give it a go.

Apparently the frame I found is used on Duesenberg guitars. I followed the link and found this:-

Now, as a PUP that looks outrageously sexy without being over the top.

It is getting like that. So much pondering. I just get to the stage of thinking "No it's fine" and then something else pops up.

What I have ordered though is black enclosed covers which could look pretty darn stealthy. Would work well with two gold and one black knob as well .....and here I go again.

While I was about it I also ordered a set in white for my HW1. The HW1 is a great guitar but I catch my fingers on the excessively high pole pieces. It might work, or it might not, but at under £4 a set, it is worth a punt.

I've often wondered, do closed covers interfere with the signal ?

I am wondering that myself. I don't think they are very thick on the base so I am assuming any effect would be negligible.

When you consider the likes of LACE, EMG etc are closed covers as standard (granted the technology is different) I guess it cant be too bad.

It will mean pre measuring the distance to the pole pieces before installing the covers as it will otherwise make establishing the PUP heights something of a challenge. I could perhaps put a tiny hole above the outer poles to accommodate a height gauge wire....a cunning plan.

Lace Dome pickups also exist in gold as a custom order.

Do you have a plater near your town, they could plate whatever you bring them for less maybe.

That's not a bad idea, a though I could probably make a plating tank for the size of things we are talking about.

Further developments:-

Gold Fender strap button's fitted

Black leather Fender strap

Gold 50's style round string tree fitted.

I have also reconfigured my old 3D printer as a small CNC router so that I can etch the spring cover plate.

If you plan building another TS hybrid in the future you can't go wrong with a Telecaster neck.

Funny thing, for years I was put off buying a Tele because I didn't like the shape of the head stock. I think it looks a bit cheap and bodged compared to the lines of the Strat...even if Leo did nick it off Burns. ;-)

Fish Faces configuration came about because the pre-machined body was on sale. I had been considering such a guitar for some time although with a Strat hard tail instead of a trem. In my custom specification I was still erring towards the Strat neck over a Tele neck because of the above.

Looking at the video I am pleased we all decided that the hybrid guard was the way to go on Fish Face. :-)

A last ditch attempt to get some images that are the right colour - still FarceBook compression is runing it but at least I only bothered using my phone :-)

I know it is the wrong back plate for a late '50's build, but I have a cunning plan.

And finally, before it gets marked, scratched and generally mullered through use.
