I was pretty much set on them initially. I was even pondering 2 knurled gold knobs for tone and one black knurled one for volume. The volume knob would be almost invisible emphasising the two knob Tele look.

But I don't know. The black knobs don't look as bad as I thought they might and they are a damn sight more practical than those pain in the bum Tele knobs where you have full on, full off, or no idea. ;-)

Fender has some serious competition on their hands!!!

What does it play/sound like?

Cheers - Peter.

I'm not sure about the first bit, although they don't seem to have many products I would be tempted to put my money into new currently so perhaps ;-)

It plays like an absolute gem. First off it is light, which I love. Having a Tele shape body means it is great for sitting down playing as it isn't constantly sliding off your leg. Standing up you have to pay attention initially as it hangs with the neck out further because of the missing top horn - but the Blues in B is as sweet as Blues in A so now biggie ;-)

It may be physiological but, even unplugged, it seems to have great tone and sustain - perhaps all this, one piece Swap Ash snake oil has some founding after all. The trem is decked so, as the lacquer hardens, this should improve even more.

I think the twang of the CS Fat 50's (assuming that is what they are) seems to suit the Tele like vibe and I much prefer them in Fish Face over their previous conventional Strat home. They seem right for the style of the guitar.

I wasn't 100% with the neck initially as it seemed cramped. Having compared the string spacing on my other Strats I found this was an illusion caused by the profile. We are now getting on a treat and having now spent some time dressing the fret ends it feels pretty silky. I love the feel of the thin coating I put on the back of the neck and am looking forward to it wearing.

With regard to wearing, having not had the patience to leave the body for 30 days to harden properly, there are already a couple of marks. This is no great upset as part of the joy of nitro is it ages to reflect your playing. Also one of the less than perfect build blemishes in the finish is at a wear point so, once it wears, it is no longer a blemish.

Fish Face was meant to have a back story the suggests he came about in the late 50's early 60's. The original owner wanted the flexibility of a Strat but found the shape too modern and intimidating so commissioned a body copied from his Telecaster in shape.

I was going to go the relic route but haven't had the heart. And putting new gold hardware in a stone tumbler so I can scratch and rust it was a step too far.

I have already said how having a relic frees you up to enjoy the guitar rather than worry about scratches and knocks. I wont deliberately relic Fish Face but, by the same token, I am looking forward to him developing his own legitimate worn look. And the joy is every knock, ding, mark and patch will be my my story as well as his.

You shouldn't have favourite children but I am starting to question the point of several of my other guitars at the moment. This is the one I want to be playing.

50's neck (and I have a round gold string tree on order) and the single ply black guard are all good but that story doesn't hold water with the black plastic as that wasn't available back then. Perhaps the gold knobs would be more appropriate after all.

Agreed.
It's already a bit of a "parallel universe" build... the gold barrel knobs would be a nice touch.
Also, a gold lipstick tube pickup at the neck would be cool.

This guitar would decidedly be much cooler with gold barrel knobs and a matching lipstick pickup set!

I have looked for Strat sized Gold lipstick PUP's as I thought that would be cool as well, but haven't had any joy so far. :-(

Gold transparent paint over the chrome? ;) Wouldn't last if the pickup isn't mounted low and you hit hard.

Apparently John was unsatisfied from the lipstick pickups he was looking for.

How about gold-plated pickup polepieces?

What I had in mind was something that would look more like a Tele pickup in the neck position, but gold.

The Tele neck pickup requires some alterations on the pickguard for a proper fit.

As for the gold pickup covers, you probably mean this one:

Will you stop teasing me. Yes that is what I want in Strat PUP size. I followed the angela.com but couldn't find start size :-(

I did find something on eBay:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Goldo-Singlecoil-Cap-Cover-Gold-Open-for-Strat-Pickup/232943209332?epid=1281532231&hash=item363c7f4b74:g:ldIAAOSwD~BbLPaY

but £18 just for bling would be a hard pill to swallow.

They must be available somewhere as Fender used them on the best looking Strat of all time

And look at that.....three gold knobs! Damn, I can't keep spending money on this guitar.

Rather than teasing you my goal was to help you further improving your build with some useful suggestions. At least you've finally found what you exactly need....

Have you seen these knobs, John?

As for pickup covers, an antique creme color might favor your body's gorgeous finish.
