Hey all, I found a 90s SRV strat in a pawnshop last weekend for a steal and put it on layaway. Unfortunately it has a massive body crack running all the way from the neck pocket to down near the strap button. I'm wondering, in terms of value of the guitar, whether I'm better off having it glued and pressed by a luthier, or if I should build a partscaster with a replacement body. I haven't had any success finding a 90s body but there are a lot of the 2000's reissue ones floating around. Ultimately I'm probably going to resell this, I'm into it for under $150 Canadian right now, and I'm perfectly happy with my 60th anniversary Strat, I figure I can probably make a bit of money for other toys. Thanks for any suggestions!

Generally it's better to have it repaired than to gut it for parts for an effectively worthless build.
At $150 invested, I wouldn't think twice about paying a pro another couple of hundred to fix it properly... and it's more than just putting glue into the crack and clamping it.
But again, at $150 invested, the pickguard and pickups are worth more than that, so if you like the neck and just want a "player", you can get a new body pre-finished from Allparts for under $400.

If the body is cracked it may not reglue. New bodies the timber is glued flat surface to flat surface. A split body may not mate properly and you would loose timber if you cleaned the jointing faces ruining the neck pocket dimensions, screw hole spacing etc.

You could end up with putting a new block of timber between the two original wings which would be pointless.

I'm thinking the best route for a keeper would be a replacement body. If you are only interested in making a profit on the guitar then you might as well just sell the parts.
