I'm shopping for an American Pro Strat, but I'm interested in the idea of some of the colors available from the Mod Shop.

Can anyone tell me how the build quality compares between the two? I'm OK with the idea of paying for a color I want, all other things being equal.

Thanks!

It's been a while since this question was asked, but I'll answer it as I am a new mod shop owner. This is my first Strat so I cannot compare it to an American pro, but I can say that the build quality is top notch. I ordered mine with the soft v neck profile which came with vintage tuners. I also ordered the 57/62 pickups which sound amazing. One of the things that completely blew me away was how quiet this guitar is. I cranked up my Bugera v22 on the dirty channel and I got almost no buzz or hum. A friend of mine did the same test on his Vox and also got virtually no hum. However, he plugged in his American standard and the hum was there plain as day. I'm not sure what magical voodoo Fender put in place when building my Strat, but I have virtually no hum with 57/62 single coil pickups. I can assure you they got the correct pick ups in my guitar as they have that distinct quack that would be missing in a noiseless.

And now for the negatives which are minor. Because I went with the soft v neck carve the truss rod adjustment is between the neck and body, so I would have to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod. Also, the neck has a gloss finish on the back instead of satin. I am hoping this will wear down over time as I don't want to take sandpaper to my beautiful Strat, but it is a little sticky feeling.

For anyone reading this, if it is in your budget I would highly recommend going with the mod shop option to get the guitar you want. It even comes with a certificate of authentication so you are really getting something a little bit special without going custom shop.

Does anyone know if the plans to extend the mod shop service to European customers has been abandoned?

I use 0000 gauge steel wool on my precious martin D 15M. The satin finish gets glossy over time and one or two swipes with the 0000 steel wool smooths it right out again.

You’ll be fine to use it on your Strat - just keep it light handed and easy does it.
