Does anyone have any first hand info on the new 12 string Strat?

https://shop.fender.com/en-US/electric- ... 60300.html

I must say I am interested!

It's the 3rd time the Strat XII being reissued.

Fender released this model in 1985 with 22 frets and an Electric XII bridge before reissuing it 3 decades later with a 21-fret neck and a modified hardtail assembly.

This time the guitar comes in the form of a factory special run as a part of the Japanese Traditional series.

The new edition appears to be identical to the last iteration that was issued in the 2005-2007 time-frame save for the finish colors. Previously it was available in 3TSB, Burgundy Mist Metallic, and Lake Placid Blue. Fit and finish of my 2007 issue in LPB were immaculate and the instrument is very comfortable to play. Under the hood are the typical substandard (for Fender) MIJ components which are easily upgradeable. In my case I opted for a set of CS69 pickups, CTS pots, Oak/Grigsby selector, and a Switchcraft output jack. It's got some real jangle now, very close in tone and timbre to a Rick 360/12 equipped with DeArmond "toasters". The guitar will seem a bit neck-heavy due to the larger headstock and six additional tuning machines. If a G&G style hard-shell case is desired, look for one that's intended to fit a RH Strat with a reverse headstock as a standard RH Strat case will not adequately secure the neck.

IOTW: Grab a loaded PG from Duncan or Sigler

Do you think the current ABS case would work? The neck is well supported without relying on the HS, but I don't know if the HS wouldn't be too long.... Fender doesn't give the dimensions, though it looks like this one may be about the same... being 6-on-each-side, straightened out a bit, but without the "ball" on the end.

I can only comment on that which I know from personal experience.

Do you still have a XII and can compare headstock length with a regular Strat?

I'm not really a 12 string person (Aside "Stairway...." I am struggling to think what I might use it for) but, from a design execution point of view, I am very impressed.

I like the bridge. It looks like, with a neck change and the appropriate bridge you might possibly be able to convert a conventional hard tail assuming the ferrules aren't off set.

The 12 string electric is certainly a niche, but though Stairway and Song Remains the Same are the benchmarks, Tom Petty and many others also used it.
It's not a lead instrument, which is what makes it less desirable for electric, but for many years (decades?) my only acoustic was a 12-string. As long as there were not a lot of bends, you can develop playing styles that go back and forth from the full bodied tone to only 6 strings... lifting the pick slightly, etc, though these methods are likely not as effective with the sensitivity of an electric.

The saddles are interesting. With the screws on the octave string side, I first thought that it was split and allowed separate intonation for all 12, but the height adjusters don't seem like they would allow it, and in all of the stock photos, the front edge appears solid. Curious why they would add the lock-down screw unless they were concerned about the reduced tension from the top-loaded strings allowing the saddles to cant.

I guess I'll have to buy one and find out :D

Here we go... Allparts offers the Gotoh for $65, and for some reason, the ferrules are staggered front to back.
https://www.allparts.com/SB-5108-010-12 ... _3273.html

The octave string rests on a separate saddle that is screwed to the main saddle, which is stepped.
The rear bridge screw adjusts intonation for both strings, then the octave string can be intonated independently.

The first iteration of this instrument (with the 22-fret neck) used the bridge designed for Fender's original Electric XII from the 1960's. That bridge featured twelve individual saddles with fully adjustable height and intonation for all twelve strings, the latter of which were all rear-loaded.

Found some good pics of that on a couple of vintage sites.
Cool design... like a grandchild of the Tele

I can't handle the hockey stick headstock though...

Thanks, for posting this omar59. I found it interesting that this is finding a market or proposing such in this day and age. I agree, as one who held a 12 string acoustic throughout the 70s, that there is a niche for such a guitar; but, in comparison to an acoustic electric 12 , the electric 12 has a small following AFAIK.

Maybe, the revival of the sixties with the culture of today is about to come full circle with music trends about to find new energy as in the past. I dunno.

Fender’s new 12 string Strat? I like it. I think you need one, Rich. :P
