Something just doesn't look right with these decals... or am I imagining things? Looks like "Fender" was painted on by hand. What are your thoughts?

Well, if it's PAINTED on it must have been done by a seriously skilled painter. Comparing it to my headstock they are nearly completely identical. However, it appears to be a sticker or piece of tape over the "contoured body" text, based on the small visible outline.

But in my eyes at least it looks quite genuine.

I really meant no offense at all. When I first opened the picture of your headstock on "PhotoBucket", it was displayed scaled down... and the black outline on "fender" looked all uneven. Now that I see it full sized, it does look completely right.

Hey--that is certainly something different.

Not sure where that would have come from--but maybe they were doing some crazy stuff when this was made.

I'm sure I remember a picture of that guitar in the 1999 edition of The Fender Book, by Tony Bacon:

Frustratingly, I am away from home for a few days so can't look up the info for you...

i bought this guitar in dublin in between 97 or 99 for £150 irish pounds (before the euro) in a shop called goodwins in Capel street, it was taken in as a trade in, the shop owner didnt know what to make of it, i just saw FENDER ! Ive tried to track down this guitars origin by phoning the fender support line, they agreed it was a 93-94 stratocaster made in japan, when i explained the set up the guy on the phone said it was probably a special order or made specificaly for the japanese market, i would love to contact someone else with one, but for now its a rare fender indeed. :D

OK, I've just looked your guitar up in the book I mentioned (above): The Fender Book, by Tony Bacon and Paul Day. There is a picture of your guitar with a sunburst finish on page 83, along with the following caption:

"Champ 10 1997 - Here's an example of a guitar that Fender Japan sell only in Japan. It's part of a "mini" Strat line, and the Champ version (just under three feet long) has a built-in amp and speaker, making it a self-contained instrument that the young Japanese player can use anywhere."

Which doesn't take us very much further forwards. Except that you now have a model name and date for your instrument. Weird one, eh?

Cheers - C
