White Dog nailed it. Punch line - any guitar that is shipped could need a setup when it arrives, regardless of how well it may have been set up before being shipped.

There's no excuse for shipping guitars that require a proper setup.
Here's some Suhr product being unboxed

One side of the matter is, factory recommended settings do not fit everybody. Actually, sometimes I find myself thinking, they don't fit anybody...

BTW, the OP hasn't been active for some time, and the issue seems to be drifting way off the original. Anyone keen to start a new topic on factory setups (yes/no/costs), factory specs (fantastic/terrible/other), best setup (there can be only one).

I think the OP has cleared off good and proper!
Didn't like the advice given. The advice was sound (buy the right thing, buy once, enjoy and play).

The rest of it is a serious bone of contention.
The best Strat type guitar I've played recently was a John Mayer signature from that company based in Maryland, and it had landed on the day I tried it, had been pulled out of its cardboard shipping carton and tuned, nothing more, and it felt like home.
The setup was excellent.

If Fender shipped guitars set up to their own recommendations it would kick the legs out from my argument, and I'd be delighted if they did it.
I won't be holding my breath.
