Just as a point of interest on the Peter Green / Gary Moore guitar: BareKnuckle Pickups recently produced what they claim is a facsimile of the famous pickups from the Lemon Drop Les Paul, complete with permanent out of phase connection in the middle switch position. Available uncovered or with a choice of covers including a relic option, the latter not mentioned on their website:

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZH-pgblues.html

This isn’t a recommendation - I have no experience of them, beyond a demo on a magazine CD - but high-minded folks in the guitar press, such as Neville Martin, have been making a big fuss over these pickups: supposedly a “carbon copy” of the Green sound, yadda-yadda. A pair of those pups comes in cheaper than that Vintage LP - but not much!

And some information about Vintage: they are a brand owned by the British company JHS (John Hornby Skewes & Co) http://www.jhs.co.uk/guitar.htm . JHS are a major distributor in the UK of a vast portfolio of brands from Ovation and Manuel Rodriguez to Danelectro guitars, and other names including Dunlop, Shubb, Grover etc etc.

A few years ago JHS decided they wanted to get into production and launched their Vintage series. Their strategy has been to follow the time-honoured Japanese path of the 1970s, starting at the very bottom with ultra-budget blatant copies, and gradually working their way up the food chain from there.

They’d be of no interest to anyone aged over 12 were it not for the fact that Trevor Wilkinson has been involved as the designer of most if not all their output. In addition to the straight rip-offs, at the next price point up he has been designing for them Fender and Gibson-esque guitars, but with quirky twists to body shape and hardware. For example, an ES 335 but with an offset body. Or a Strat-alike with three P90s. And nikininja’s “Lemon Drop” Peter Green Les Paul. I may or may not be correct in thinking that all of their production comes from China: Wilkinson certainly seems to spend a great deal of his time there.

Recently, the brand has been moving upwards with very well received mid-market acoustics: if they persist along the Ibanez/Yamaha career route we will presumably one day see them daring to launch an electric design or two of their own. In the meantime, JHS is also behind Trev Wilkinson’s recent relaunch of the Fret-Kings brand, the cheaper end of which is far east, the expensive part made in Britain.

At first, Vintage was a UK only brand, then Europe. My understanding is that they are beginning to appear in the US: when that gathers steam you will know about it, because they are not shy regarding advertising in the guitar press!

Another verbose post from the bottomless pit of useless information… - C

[quote="Ceri"]Just as a point of interest on the Peter Green / Gary Moore guitar:

I have a box set of the original Fleetwood Mac containing a plethora of studio recordings, masters, out-takes and the like. For what its worth, if Peter is playing THAT guitar, I'm wondering at all the fuss. It's a good sound, but I must be missing something.

As far as Gary Moore is concerned, though he is a fine player, his blues style is still a bit over the top and I find the edge he gives it very hard on the ears.

Simply a matters of taste and preference.

Doc

Pretty much what I thought when I listened to the demo of the replica pickups. But I just presumed it must be my ears at fault. Nobody could make that much fuss over something so apparently small - could they?

Pete Green's sound and technique has always been the zenith of blues guitar in my opinion infact its what got me into playing and still when im in the doldrums 26 years later it picks me up. Alot of mac recordings are jeremy spencer playing brash slide and danny kirwan prattling on about hippy garbage. To really hear the tone of that guitar check out the john mayall 'Hard Road' lp. It contains some of greens finest moments and is somewhat overshadowed (unjustifiably) by the beano album. To quote bb king 'Peter green is the only man to make me shiver with one note.'

Im a complete pete green fanatic, if Gibson released the guitar for £25000 i'd sell the house to buy it. If the Vintage ends up as a decoration on the wall after 2 weeks I haven't lost out. I haven't played the RR3 in 8 months.

Just to be clear, my luke warm reaction was to a CD demo of the replica pickups - which I have not encountered in real life. Wasn't commenting one way or the other on Peter Green.

(Though purely visually I've always thought that an especially beautiful Les Paul. How shallow of me...)

Just to be clear, it's the price of a house that intrigues me!

its an obsessive disorder of mine. When i see what i want my brain stops working. Of course i wouldnt sell the house, where would i plug in? :D
Of course personal taste is just that... personal. I dont expect people to like what i like, and likewise my preferences dont have to correspond with theirs. I do however appreciate it when somebody can point out a piece of work by an artist that i dont like, that might grab me. Or even point out nuances of their playing that i can appreciate.
