You can get into muddy waters with some cheap guitars, but as long as you stay with some of the major brands (Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, etc.), you should do alright.

Really? Did Muddy Waters use a MIM?

I agree w/ all posts basically, the player determines a lot what is coming out of the guitar cheap or not.

Amps make the most difference in my opinion. Plug a $200 guitar into a really nice/expensive amp and chances are it will sound quite pleasing. Plug a $5,000 guitar into a $200 amp and you will think the guitar is overpriced.

I think we've all had some luck w/ affordable guitars, I know I have. Hope you enjoy what you get!

I learnered on a Squire strat and now own a MIM strat. I didn't realize until I played the MIM how much the Squire had soiled the Stratocaster name in my mind. The guitar wouldn't stay in tune and just sounded cheap in general. Of course, it was cheap. If I did it over again, I would have spent a little extra to start with a MIM. That said, I did learn to play the guitar, which is kind of the point of the entry level gear. In my opinion, if you are looking to learn how to play, you should start on an acoustic.

i pretty much think that it alll depends on your style and your overall rank as a guitar player, if your are good any guitar would be just as easy to play your favorite. i have played a sqier and my dads strat, and wallah................... they both play the same[/quote]
