HEY i'm new here

i just wanted to know some of your thoughts on squiers or other cheap guitars. i have one (sunburst, rosewood fretboard) and it's not too bad. 'course, it's not an MIA! But it's okay, and a steal for the price. I find myself getting better everyday, practicing my pentatonic riffs, and really, i get compliments. I'm an amateur (beginner-intermediate) and wanted to hear your thoughts.

:)

BTW, i'll submit a picture soon.

Welcome to the Forum.

I've never owned or played a Squire before, but I've seen many posts in this forum from people who say they've had a good experience with them. Now a MIM strat or tele are very decent guitars. I own one of each. So....if you ever decide to move up on a purchase, that might be one that you'd like.

Hey man, as far as I'm concerned there's plenty of good guitars our there for under $500. Sure, a good $1500 guitar is better then a good $500 guitar but would you take your $1500 guitar to a frat party? Nope. There's always gonna be a place for decent inexpensive guitars. I've got a $200 Epi I love and all I did was change the pickups. It's not my go to guitar but it's nice for a change.

A decent musician can usually make a cheap instrument sound pretty good. Check out some recordings by David Lindley. He's used all kinds of instruments and Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) plays a Hohner Melodica during their shows.

Mike has that dimed!

Play what feels and sounds good to you.

I pulled a $249 Squier off the wall and put it into the hands of a young kid who was auditioning a new "08 MIA Standard and couldn't decided if he really needed another guitar, or spend the money on his GAS jones.

I judge, very often, by the fit and finish of the neck, for starters. This one was excellent.

Don't know what he decided, but there sure is good stuff out there. The MIM Club will give the nod to that, no doubt.

Hope today finds you well, Mike. You know how to reach me if you want to chat.

Doc

It helps to have a decent amp too.

Of course, the cheap instrument has to have a decent set up so as not to hinder the decent musician.

I'm a big fan of cheapies. gig em, mod em, parts are cheap, bust em your not overwrought with sorrow. The standard of todays beginner guitars is tremendous. My first guitar was a avon rose morris les paul copy with a bolt on neck you could fire arrows from and 2 singlecoils in humbucker housings. It's a wonder i ever stuck with playing.
Does any manufacturer make a 'bad guitar' these days? even the likes of encore's guitars are playable. Budget guitar builders seem to have found the magic niche of cheap enough to learn on, and wont be too much of a loss if you give up, and a guitar thats actualy playable enough to learn on.

I blame the internet!

Without being able to read endlessly about these sorts of things people would be much happier with cheaper guitars. When I started about 15 years ago, I knew a squier was a squier and a fender was a fender. My first electric guitar was a MIM strat and have never looked back. My friends thought it was great because it sounded great and played great. To top it off it was a Fender...it didn't matter that it was MIM and not MIA. Now I also have a Squier which is also fantastic.

Now we have the internet to tell us what is good and bad and what we need to upgrade rather than simply becoming a good guitar player and learning to find a sound.

Play what you can afford and what feels good and what sounds good. This is about music and art and 99% no one will care about the name on the headstock. And if people do care just tell them to listen to the music and stop being pretetious and judgemental...thats a rock and roll statement!

Yeah, it all depends on how you play. I've got a Fender Starcaster, not the best guitar in the world, but I can make music with it. My take on it is, that when I can: identify the problems with my guitar, feel like I've learned a lot, and comfortably walk into a music store with the intention of playing and buying a new guitar. THEN, that's when I should consider picking up something better than a "cheap" guitar. You can get into muddy waters with some cheap guitars, but as long as you stay with some of the major brands (Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, etc.), you should do alright.

I just bought my son his first guitar. I had my eye on a Squire Strat with Seymour Duncan designed pups. It would have set me back about $400. Being his first guitar, and not sure if he'd stick with it, I looked aroun and found a Rogue HH for $120. All 26 reviews were outstanding... solid mahogany body, Bill Turner pups, Grover tuners... etc. When it arrived I was amazed. After a quick set-up this baby rocked. I've paid more for pickups alone and not gotten the sound this guitar was putting out. Great finish, although the fit left a little to be desired. All in all this guitar should last him quite a while.
