The earliest Strats in the 50s had 8 hole pickguards.

In the late 50s-early 60s they started to have 11 screws instead.

Later the screws changed places a bit, remaining 11 though.

You can find modern models with all these, either by Fender or Squier

And then by the late 80s, new models again came out with 8 hole.
A true vintage body from an 8-hole will have a smooth control cavity route.
A newer body will have a "step" to accept the hole that is just under the 5-way switch.

8 holes should also be either white or anodised aluminium.

The 80's were Fenders first foray into selling reproduction vintage guitars. Then, and ever since, the authenticity of the various vintage lines have varied from very good to little more than using some vintage colours.

If your guitar is mid 80's with an 8 hole, single ply pick guard it should also have other 50's Strat vintage attributes. These were notably more expensive at around $1000 (half as much again) than a regular Strat. A bold move on Fenders part to offer a 57 reproduction for $1000 when, apparently, you could buy a good original 57 for $3000. How times have changed.
