about a month ago i was in the same position as you. the american standard is great because of the quality and simplicity. however the american deluxe is superb in quality and quite complex.

The 2008 american standard strat has been improved greatly! The new slightly tinted neck and polished maple fingerboard is a major plus, as well as the new bridge. The american strat pickups are pretty good; nice tone.. however they are not noiseless like the deluxe. Another plus... SO MANY COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM!

the deluxe comes with the 2 point synchronized tremolo with the stainless steel saddles and pop in arm (this is a wicked wicked bridge) the bridge paired with the locking tuners are an unreal duo. You've probably already heard a lot of negative comments about the SCN pickups which i totally disagree with. The SCN's are fantastic, they do not make any annoying noise and they are very powerful pickups. Reading all of those comments about them i was expecting them to sound nothing like a strat pickup. They are different BUT they still keep that famous strat tone. The SCN's paired with S1 is awesome.

after the extensive hours of playing and researching both guitars i went for the Deluxe V neck because A.) the V neck is a dream to play and B.) for me it plays better. so keep comparing and playing and rock on!

+100 for scn's.
they certainly have more character than stock american standard pickups, but you do have to lower em right into the body to get the best out of em.

Hello Pjrocks,

Deluxe cost more but well
worth it for the extras you get.

I own both and others and that
deluxe is a heck of a guitar.

Best of luck on you choice.

Cheers.

I like the scn pickups too. I am buying the deluxe.
I pick mine up next week. I can't wait!

The recessed heel!!
S1-swtching
locking tuners and roller nut
HSH routing

I can say more but... dude.
strat rips, shreds, tears, and screams.
mine has an ebony fretboard cuz its the FMT
actually its extremely strat sounding...

I own it. I recommend it. The deluxe is a dream to play. No problems with tuning or tone. But I must admit, when I get a craving for the vintage tone I go to my 62 reissue or my Mayer signature.

My suggestion is to play both and then ask yourself which one
"feels" better. If its the standard then buy the standard. If its
the deluxe then dont buy the standard just because its cheaper, wait
til you got the cash and never look back. Dont compromise. I've
been sorry every time I've compromised...

For the extra $200, go for the Deluxe.

There's a reason they call them "Deluxe"

Here's the deal from my perspective. The MIA is going to cost the most but be a better investment over time, as others have stated. However, guitar companies like Fender need to make good quality guitars that younger people can actually procure otherwise their customer base will dry up. How many 14 year olds have got $800+ to buy a "real" strat? Not many! Fender has wisely developed the MIM strategy (and Gibson the Epi strategy) to keep people hooked on their guitars. And what a great product they offer! Most, except the most discerning players couldn't tell the difference between a MIM and a MIA. I have had an MIA and an MIM and I can't really tell. I love my MIM - it sounds, looks, and plays awesome. Thanks, Fender, for making a product that allows people to enjoy making great music with great Fender sounds at a price they can still afford in these tough times of $4 gasoline.

The only things I don't like about the Deluxe models are the "abalone" fret marker dots on maple necks. I can't see 'em so good. Give me black dots, please.

I'm never looking at them, when I'm playing. I think it's eye candy for the audience. I use the dots on the edge of the guitar neck (next to the 6th string), as you look down. (don't know what they're called.)
