3rd attempt.

I have a problem with my Stratocaster. It has 2 serial numbers in the neck pocket. Which one should be displayed on the head?

Neither. The ink stamps in the neck pocket of the body are part numbers; manufacturing dates & marks; production line control marks; worker scriblings and whatnut, they're not serial numbers.
The 48700 is an American Standard body, used in several models.
The NOV 04 (1995 or 1985, the third digit is a bit blurred) is the body manufacture date.

More info might lead to more help.

Thanks for the reply. I bought this in poor condition, the guitar, not me.

Here are a couple more pics to help.

As you can see, the headstock is broken.

I have done a lot of repairs and all is working but I'd love to have its original serial number in place.

48700? or is the last digit a 6?

looking at the no 04 number the second last digit. Is it an 8?

The long side of the 9 is straight. The 2nd last number indents. is it an 8?

If the stamp had moved when being applied, the whole number set would or should have blurred.

Back to the community!

Is this one of the first 1985's from Corona?

If you try to renumber the neck you run the risk of it looking like a fake which might be worse than leaving it off.

You could guess a number and then put it in the Fender Serial Number Checker but all that does is confirm you guessed the serial number of a guitar with the same specification, it isn't necessarily that guitar.

If the Serial Nº has gone, it has gone.

This
Without a CoA or photos, there is no way to determine the original SN.
If you buy a replacement neck from Fender, it will have a "new" USxxx or MXxxx serial number so it will look authentic, but that SN will not produce a result in the online database and a call to Fender would reveal it to be a replacement neck SN.

If you don't possess the broken portion of the headstock, you will never know the original serial number. And any historical reference id= is merely speculation.
Although broken and looking like a spear tip, it should play just fine. Enjoy it as is or as suggested buy a replacement neck.

Yeah as long as CLowRay doesn't need the High E string it will play just fine

Being Friday-overly-optimistic, tracing the serial by tracing previous owners might prove to be a fun trip...

But really, unless you have above-average skills with wood, maybe just get a new neck - possibly a second hand one about the same age as the rest. If serial number matching really matters, get one from the same color Strat. 8)

And on the numbers, 48700 makes sense (= AmStd body), but I'm not aware (doesn't mean such can't exist) of any Strat body with 48706.

Maybe in another 30yrs or more the value may go up... don't play speculation.

Buy a new neck of you choice.
Hang the old neck on the wall as art.

True dat, he does however use the high E # 1 string its the low E # 6 he ditched, and there are times I would like to ditch my # 6 string also, but most of the time I am glad it is there
