I tried posting this yesterday, but can't find it so I'll try again. I'm new to the forum so please bare with me!

I have a 2012 American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS. Bought it maybe 2 years ago. Until earlier this week I never tried the S1 switch. First time I tried pressing it, all was well -- it stayed in the locked down position and I could hear the changes in tone. Now it will not lock down?! If I hold it down the tones do change. I've looked on line at images of the switch, but that hasn't helped. I have not taken off the pick guard and don't want to, unless there is a good chance I can fix the switch (maybe a shot of lubricant/Plastic safe contact cleaner)?

Has anyone had this issue? Does anyone have any insight on whether it can be fixed without having to remove and replace the S1/volume switch?

Thanks for listening!

Hi & welcome to the forum.

The forum has a delay policy to fight spam, so that's why your first post didn't show earlier.

On the switch, you could try some contact cleaner spray. The S1 may have just developed bad habits from lack of use. But those (relatively complicated) switch/pots are more prone to problems than regular pots, so it may be broken.

Using a pro for a check up is always a good option; I'll read between the lines that the 2012 guitar has not had a 'yearly maintenance' for who knows how long.

PS: If the S1 needs to be replaced, they are not the easiest ones to solder...

In his place I would remove the fancy wiring and go back to the basics.

The S1 switch is a gimmick.

Do you own a Stratocaster with S-1 switching?

Have you ever even played one?

I submit that you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

I guess chromeface doesn’t like the idea of 5 more extra pup tone choices that can be chosen or ignored. Me? I must like gimmicks. I have an S-1. If nothing else I can play all three pickups at once. That’s seldom available with a blade switch. :P
I was going to trade in my five way gimmicky switch so I could play Buddy Holly and jam a three way in between positions 1 and 2 (Bridge and Middle) and positions 2 and 3 (Middle and Bridge), but I’m kinda attached to the five way now, and it works well with the S-1.

Three ways are okay too, but obviously less convenient and less practical.

How to use the gimmicks in an S-1:

https://www.fender.com/articles/tech-ta ... l-options/

Tip: Even if you only like one of the extra five S-1 options that’ll be worth it IMO. Any more is a bonus in my book. YMMV

Rawk on!

*Note: Your guitar may not apply as in the link above. It may be wired differently, but the samples given will be similar. YouTube, the Net, the manual and/or guide that came with the guitar may also be of assistance. Failing that, your ears are the best resource. You’ll need an S-1 to experience the switching effects though. :D

Thanks a million times for all the info. The S1 in my Strat was fully enclosed. Spraying it with a plastic safe contact cleaner/ lube did not fix it. I bought a new one and had it installed locally. All working well now. Whether it's worth the $$, who knows? I bought the guitar wanting the gimicks so I felt I should fix it! Thanks again.

I've been going back and forth on this on both my AmSpec and Partscaster (still waiting on the body).
I bought a Sigler loaded black PG with TX Spl's so I wouldn't have to pilfer my AmSpec stock PG, but the only one they had available was with the toggle to join the neck and bridge.
OK, that's cool... I have that on my S500, so I'll live with the toggle not being a "perfect" 1970s thing.

Then I keep thinking about the S1... and today, made up my mind to swap out the PG on the Sigler for one without the toggle, and swap an S1 into the volume.
Why?
S1 Normal:
"Delta" tone circuit with the tone on the bridge and neck.
S1 Down:
Join bridge and neck pickups, AND move Tone-2 from the bridge to the middle pickup.

That option will still allow for tone control of the bridge pickup either by itself, joined with the neck, or joined with the middle, as well as allow for tone control of the middle pickup when played by itself.

I'll do the same on the Partscaster with the Noiseless pickups.

My only concern is if/when Fender discontinues the S1.
They are still included on several models, but I don't see them on the web site (even though they are still listed on Amazon).

I guess the functions I described can still be covered with a DPDT toggle if needed.

Sounds like a plan, Rich. That plan is a good example of the flexability of the S-1 switch. IMHO. There are many ways to get to the desired result, but the “S” in S-1 could stand for slick.

I searched the Fender site(s) too with no luck. I hope the switch hasn’t taken or isn't about to take a hike. That would definitely suck. At my age it may “Knock on alder” not affect me. But, it won’t gain any fans either. Maybe, having a working S-1 will bring higher prices (or lower). Whatever the case, it appears to be another question for Fender to answer.

Keep us posted on your project, Rich, and let us know how it works out for ya. :D

The Baja Tele is still in production, so they have obviously sourced enough for anticipated demand, though I don't know if the Tele switch is the same one (knurled split shaft).
It could just be one of those things that isn't available on the site... just odd that it is on Amazon.

Try this site for your S1 needs. I haven't purchased anything from his site, but it looks as if he has the most types.

FYI, when I was having issues with my S1, I called customer service. They directed me to Darren Riley guitars. I ordered a new S1 from him and had it in ONE DAY!!! His service can't be beaten, in my opinion. The switches shown on Amazon are the old style switches, Darren has the new style switch, (which I might add was the one originally installed on my 2012 American Deluxe HSS.)

I too was thinking of the Tele with the switch, Rich. I always thought that chrome version was a nice touch. Were it not available, I’m sure it would be missed by those who desire it.

Thanks, for the observations and additional suggestions, gang. Nothing in the guitar world seems to last forever, but hopefully the S-1 switch will have a long life.

Nice start to the Forum, N8xwb. Welcome.
