I have a 2012 Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS. I never use the S1 switch (don't tell anyone, but I forgot it existed til today and I've had the guitar for maybe 2 years). Today I tried the switch. The first time it worked. Now it will not stay down. When I press it I can hear the tonal change so I know it works, just won't lock down. Is this something I can fix myself (maybe hit the bottom of the switch with some contact cleaner) or will I have to buy and replace the switch? Thanks for any replies!

1-Try contact cleaner with lubricant, you nee to remove the knob to spray in the center aof the shaft where is the mechanism .
Not sure it wll fix it .

2-You have to replace by a new switch

Remove the fancy S1 switch and go back to the much desired basic wiring scheme.

It's an HSS... the S1 switch allows for the H to be split and go back to a more normal Strat sound.

But for the most part, I agree with you. I've built and wired guitars with all of the coil tap/split/phase/series/parallel options like a Jimmy Page Les Paul... the only switches I ever used were to turn the pickups on and off. I've had coil taps on a number of humbucker guitars, and when I've wanted a single coil tone, I've put it down and picked up one of my single coil guitars... a coil tapped 'bucker just doesn't sound like a single.

N8xwb - You can buy a replacement S1 switch/pot. They aren't on the Fender store (that I can find), but they are on Amazon for $26. However, take a look at the reviews... one indicates that sticking is a problem, that they work fine when tested on the bench, but sometimes stick when mounted and tightened down.
Loosen yours up a but and see if that solves the problem, then maybe snug it up tight enough, but not so tight that it sticks.
