Hi,

I just picked up a 1983 Squier JV Strat and the upper tone pot doesn't do anything, it doesn't affect the sound in any way. The lower tone pot works as expected – does this mean that the cap is fine? I've opened her up and examined the wiring and everything seems to be in order.

The sound is also quite tinny. I read that a weak and tinny sound can be the result of the ground wire coming loose, but the solder joints seem to be ok.

I know I should get a multimeter and examine the components and wiring more thoroughly, but maybe someone on this forum has had a similar problem and could point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

There's many things that can cause a tone pot problem, so I think any peer help is just guessing. And same with the tinny sound (which pickups/combinations?); it could be because of phase issues, bad solder joints, caps, switch, pot(s)...

And since so many JV's have been modded, I'd start by tracing the current wiring, then checking that with e.g. AVRI 57 wiring. (The switch, if original for a JV, may be different/turned.)
Then start eliminating; the multimeter is real handy.

I'm no wiring guru myself, but pic(s) of the wiring might wake better experts on the forum.
