My opinion after watching Phillip McKnight's comparison video (I've been a Subscriber of his for years), personally, I'm not impressed at all with the new pickups compared to the Standard. I'll stick with the two Standard's I already own (and I got both brand new for under $500 each).
And; I don't want or need any stinking Gig bags free or not...but I would agree on a nice "discount" for a hardshell case with any guitar purchase---maybe something like a %Percentage% so, the more you spend, the higher the discount.

The alnico pickups do not make much difference to my ear but ...
This new series seems perfect for upgrade. In Europe, the price is almost identical to the standard.
Fender renews itself and it's a good thing to offer quality guitars at this affordable price

Yes, they did upgrade the MIM Standard a few years back. Medium jumbo frets, and I think an improved trem block. I've A-B'd the newer models with the older ones and didn't see/hear/feel enough of a difference to upgrade. But with the new pickups and 2-point bridge, there might be enough of a difference now to take the plunge.

I think so too, schnepf13. I still play my 23yo MIM all the time and love it but the new Player Series is very interesting. I'm gonna see if I can play one this weekend. 8)

Sweet! I'd be interested to see what you thought about them after playing one...

I'll give you my review, if I get to play one. Right now I'm waiting for a NP to come to my house for my annual wellness check. They gave me a window of 1:30 - 5:30.

Rather depends what features you want though, doesn't it, Bluesman? I bought a cheap AmSpec and immediately had it refretted to medium jumbos. Also fitted a Switchcraft jack. Still a cheap US Strat.

Now it's perfect for me: Great vintage colour (not nitro but pretty thin), 2 string trees, light weight, great neck, vintage-looking trem (which may be cheap but sounds fine to me), the Texas Specials (love 'em!), no Micro Tilt (never wanted or used). Probably more but that's off the top of my head; it's one of my favourite Strats and I'd buy another tomorrow (if I needed one!).

But obviously if you want/need different features, the MIM might well suit, and I have to say - even in GB - prices are keen. Tempting!

Cheers - Peter.

Hey Peter, glad you are liking your AmSpec. I tried to like it, but couldnt get used to the Texas Special p/ups. I believe its either you love them or hate them. I had the HSS version and the atomic humbuckers were just too bright for me. I returned it for a MIM deluxe just because of the vintage noiseless pick ups it came with. Liked it at first but when the new Player came out and I had the chance to try it, the deluxe went back to the store for the Player. I'm liking the PLayer a lot specially after I changed the tuners. I don't know if I'll get tired of it, only time will tell. For now I plan to keep it. Gigged with it 2 days ago and it didnt disappoint. :-)

Thanks, schnepf13. It wasn't bad, so that's good. Killed my afternoon though. Money is tight right now so I might part with my Gibson LP Custom to cover the Player Strat and a MIDI keyboard and some other stuff. I have a neighbor who has been jonesing for it for some time. I hope this a good week for guitars and gear! Have a good week. 8)

I just came home with one of these, (the red one with pau ferro board) and I can verifiably say that Fender has really hit it out of the park with this one. It's the Strat that the Mexican Standard should have been all along, a Mexican made version of the American Standard. It's pretty much the Mexican Standard neck but with 22 frets, which to me is the best playing neck in the whole Fender/Squier line, not too thin or too fat, but just right, and flawless fretwork that plays like butter. And I don't agree with another comment about the pickups, as they're the real star here, although actually the whole guitar is. But, these pickups just perfectly nail the classic 60s Strat sound with overdrive, very similar to the Classic Vibe 60s Strat pickups, but perhaps even sweeter and more responsive. And the two point bridge is also the most responsive I've ever encountered. I like a really light touch vibrato, and two point ones are usually tighter than six screw ones. But, this one is lighter than both, but not too much so. To me it's just right. This looks like it's gonna turn out to be my favorite, best playing, best sounding Strat of all, even over my Am Pro, CP60s, DLX Roadhouse, Hendrix, and Classic Vibe 60s Strats.

I'm happy to report that my 2018 MIM Player series Strat has a solid bottom screw in socket in the tremolo block and the American Series Stratocaster Tremolo Arm Tension Springs Model #: 0994931000 fit perfectly.

Why Fender does not include this .50 cent spring with the guitar is anyone's guess. It was included with my 2017 American Special, but not my 2018 Player. Loving my Player.

Player Strat bodies are routed for HSH like their big US cousins.

American Specials don't come with Switchcraft jacks? I thought they did. American Standards did.

Well, if they do, mine was dodgy. When I plugged in, it never felt as secure as it should - and the Switchcraft now does.

Cheers - Peter.

I went to a GC tonight to try one out and they only had two of them and their only difference was color. They were HSS with maple fingerboards. I was hoping to try a Pau Ferro, but no such luck. I haven't been to a GC in a while but I noticed they had much less inventory than I remembered.

I liked the guitar a lot but didn't get to really play it because it was getting close to closing time and the salesman was uninterested in helping. So much for GC.
