hey everybody! my father has a 1981 "the strat". he bought it used and was thinking about doing a smie-resto to it. the original electronics are there except for the lower tone switch. its a 2 way rotary switch that as far as i know was only used on these guitars. the original part number is 017862. i've been trying to find an original switch for it. anybody have any leads or ideas?

this website has the most info i've found.

And make sure you have a reputable tech on this unless you yourself have all the chops.

Hello Gang,
I have one of those 1980 "The Strat" guitars, aka, X-1 Strat. Really sweet guitars, too bad there are'nt that many around.

Why is that bad? It makes your guitar more valuable!

Anything vintage and well-cared for, particularly reflecting a milestone in the continuing evolution of the Stratocaster, is likely to be of interest to some collector, either now, or in the future. You should take the time to review its place as discussed by A.R. Duchossior in his books.

The instrument should be preserved as a legacy to someone in your family, hopefully a musician, who will appreciate the value of it's worth, not in dollars necessarily, who will carry on the tradition.

I offer this to the previous poster as well, who has come to the guitar through his dad.

I appreciate the advice Doc,
I'm well aware of the reviews of A.R. Duchossoir's books, I have a few of them myself.
My 1980 X-1 Strat is not completely stock anymore as I've changed a few things about the guitar that really bugged me. The changes I've made are as follows:
Replaced the chrome Fender/Schaller tuning machines with gold high gloss Sperzel locking tuners.
replaced the steel string trees with gold Fender Ezy-Glide string trees.
Replaced the stock nut with Fender LSR roller nut.
Replaced the chrome Tremolo stem with a gold stem and re-used the original brass tip on it.

I was really bugged by how the guitar had the sweet gold hardware all over the guitar except in the places mentioned above, so I updated this situation, since I use this guitar regularly.
I have no heirs at this time to leave a legacy to, and I still play all my instruments like they were meant to be used.
Everything else on this guitar is as it was the day it was shipped from the factory.
Pics of this guitar can be found under the thread with my name on it.

I'm looking for one too. I realized that someone had borrowed mine and switched it out. Did you ever get a replacement switch for your Strat? Any advice in finding another?

Thanks!

You can try Angela Instruments I have had good luck with them in the past for many Fender NOS stuff.

When I was a kid I had a Fender catalog and I used to drool over the Walnut Strat. That one's a keeper, and definitely worth a restoration if it needs it.

Yeah, I agree! Mine is candy apple red and I've always loved it, but that walnut one is a beauty!

It also builds up your muscles and impacts your spine....that is the all time heaviest Strat ever made.

I do know the switch for the alternate pickup selction is a Switchcraft made part, but I can't say whether or not they'd still have it.

Gotta love that Candy Apple Red with the gold hardware. I got lucky with mine, it has one of the most incredible Blues tones that a Strat could ever produce
