I don't know, it might well have done for me years back. I now just tend to feel frustrated that I'm not better than I am. Looking back on it I am stunned I had the gaul to do what I did, obviously the arrogance of youth.

Absolutely. For me, it has always been a simple matter of lack of dedication to practice time. I've always done little more than "noodle around" looking for ways to play particular riffs, but often getting no more than the basics close enough to play something "identifiable"... but not fully "correct".

But do you really have to do any more than that to develop your own style? I don't think so. I can't read or write music and am entirely self-taught, only copying Hank Marvin etc in the early days before heading off in the blues/rock direction. I don't want to sound like anyone else (although I appreciate if you're in a covers band you're going to need to copy the original guitar parts).

Although I've played in groups, for donkey's I played instrumentals along to self-recorded backing tracks, sometimes stuff I'd made up, often reasonably recognisable songs. Never played the same way twice, just my interpretation of the song/tune. Loved doing it, and - while I was never going to sell out the Royal Albert Hall - it always went down very well. Couldn't have made a living out of it, of course...!

Age and meds have put a stop to that, but it was fun!

Cheers - Peter.

What frustrates me is I almost never hear stuff coming out of my amp that makes me think "Wow! That sounds cool." It could be because I equally almost never record stuff and listen to it back. Being in the moment, anything half decent is just a transient thing and I'm already involved in playing the next bit. Perhaps I need to record more.

Just from recording backing tracks, John - yes - you can capture some good stuff, but it's all a bit artificial, I find, because you can keep on tracking it until you get what you want. As you suggest, it's not spontaneous.

I agree that very often there's nothing amazing coming from my daily playing, but when there is, it almost always comes from playing to backing track/s I haven't used for a while (or when I played with other musicians, playing something we hadn't visited for ages). And daft things like where you're standing in relation to the amp, where my amp and PA speakers are in the room, stuff like that. It's all very odd - sometimes you just feel/play great, don't you? - other times it's a bit routine!

Distinctly off-topic, but interesting all the same! Cheers - Peter.

Yes, Joe Perry played one a lot. Still does.
