1959 would most likely have had Homoclad as the sealer/basecoat.

Homoclad is a synthetic non-catalyzed sealer (Sherwin-Williams doesn't give a lot of info on exactly what it is). It's often described as having a beer-like consistancy. They'd fill a 50 gallon drum with it and dip the bodies into it. It soaks into the wood and doesn't build up a thick surface layer.

If you strip off the nitro the body might look like bare wood. But unless you sand pretty deeply into the body, the Homoclad is still there. You could pour water onto the body and it would just run off.

Fullerplast is a 2-part catalyzed conversion varnish. It's sprayed on and does build a surface layer. If you look at SRV's #1 you can see it. There are a few areas where he managed to wear through it down to the bare wood, but in most of the areas where the nitro is gone it's still glossy -- that's the Fullerplast layer.

Of course it's possible that particular 1959 was one of the few that was painted without being sealed first. As I said, that was never the standard method, but they are rumored to exist.

Fullerplast and Homoclad are still available, and the Custom Shop uses them on the Time Machine reissues.
