As far as im concerned fender and gibson can't be compared. They are totally different and both excellent guitars. I hate when i see Teles and Les Pauls being compared because they are nothing alike, even HH Teles sound totally different. I think the reason why anyone compares them is because of the body shape? which doesn't make sense because LP's have carved maple tops, and shapewise not all that similar.

What guys?

A good luthier should be able to repair it. If it didn't have metal studs in the body, you could switch to that type of tuneomatic bridge. A straightforward job, IMO.

nat when all the wires tore and wood was damaged

I was inadvertantly pulled toward the dark side.... I went to a high end music store and played a $3500 Custom Gibson LP through a Fender Deluxe. The jazz chords I was working through from my lessons sounded so thick and warm. I was just about sold..... until I tried to play some of my funky rhythms and couldn't quite find a good angle for stroke attack or hip volume for clean 16ths :( .
I grabbed an American Std strat off the wall and switched out. Small tweak on the Deluxe Eq and I was surprisingly close to the Gibson tone and there's nothing like the dynamix of going between thick jazzy chords to crisp funky transisitons. It's the basis of my style Jazz + Funk (JUNK! ).
You can play nice Rock (you can really crush those power chords on a LP) and some smooth jazz with a Gibson, but you can play that and all the other 'JUNK' with a strat.

What's that stuff about a good luthier.....? You can probably buy a MIM strat and a Princeton Chorus for the repair costs on that LP.

There is no 'dark side" in my opinion. There is definitely room for both. You do not have to pay $3500 for a nice new Les Paul. Gibson does make the Les Paul Classic,
which (in my opinion) is the cheapest high quality Les Paul out there (I am not a fan of the other lesser LP models).
They can be had for around $1900 new.

Now if I only had 7,600 quarters laying around here ...

O1GT,
You do have a point. Actually, I do have a Ibanez Artist (LP in sheep's clothing) that I play frequently hanging next to the strat on the wall. If I only played Jazz and Lead guitar I would use that or would consider a nice Les Paul. $1900 is still a lot of cash especially when you can pick up a USA strat for ~$700.
The reality for me is that I play a lot of different kinds of rhythm and my main focus is more funk and blues. For me the Strat covers it all and I'm way too lazy to carry more than 1 guitar to the jam sessions!

Nothing sounds better than a strat through my Custom 5E3 D-lux amp.

I was not trying to infer you were wrong. Not at all. I respect your opinion, for sure. I totally agree that lesser costing Strats can give a nice LP a serious run for the money. I was just pointing out, depending on what we can afford, though, there is nothing wrong with owning both. That, and a REALLY nice new LP can be had for less than $2k.
:D

Is it just me or do they "feel" like two totally different instruments?
Like comparing a trumpet to a tuba? I've been playing strats for 21 years
and Gibsons just feel awkward in my hands like "want do you want me to do with this?" I don't know its like arguing Ford vs Chevy...

As much as I've been more lenient to Fender guitars lately, I'm gonna have to vote Gibson on this. My reason: My first guitar was a Flying V faded, which I still have, and I love that guitar. That's the only Gibson I'm used to and the only one I really like, but no Fender can beat it. I wouldn't sell my V for a million dollars. I do like Fenders, but I can't vote for them because the V's my favorite guitar. Sorry Fender fans I hope you understand.

What do you expect to hear in a Fender forum? I love strats, Les Pauls, and Telecasters. SGs too - they sound great but they're pretty ugly IMO. Depends on the kind of music that you play. Fenders are a far better value, however. They are mighty versitile and the cost is so much more reasonable. With a hot rails in the bridge position there is nothing that you can't play with a Fender. Not true of the Gibsons. Gibson Les Pauls are awesome sounding and looking guitars, but their pricing is just so ridiculous. I have also heard bad rumors about quality issues (at least relative to their cost) as well. There are some nice Epi Les Pauls though and the price is more reasonable on those. You can't really pick one over the other - all electric guitars are awesome if you ask me. I am going to keep adding to my collection and take them all with me when I die.

I always loved the vintage burst plain top. I never had much need for flames and birdseye.

I'm curious as to how the bridge just fell off.
I am too... since a majority of Gibson guitars have the strings pressing down on the bridge...

The only one I can think of that might pull on the bridge instead of push is the Les Paul Junior, with a wraparound bridge/tailpiece combination.
