That is not the gearing ratio causing the problem.
You have a nut that needs sorting out or replacing.
Whichever it is, the slots need to be cut by a competent individual who knows what they're doing.

Schaller tuners are very well machined bits of kit.
As already mentioned, if the button screws are too tight the tuner will be difficult to turn, but beyond that there's little to go wrong.

Nut isn’t binding, you’d hear the “ping” plus is a graph tech nut.

Well something's binding up!
What do you lube the nut and string tree with?

It’s not binding, it’s the machine heads themselves. I’ll try to loosen them a bit, maybe that will work. But they are older, so it’s possible they need to be oiled.

I bought new Fender replacement tuners. We'll see if they work or not.

Finally got around to replacing the Schallers on this Strat. When I remove the Schallers, they had no bushings. Basically they were being bent ever so slightly causing the posts to be unsupported. I found a few were really tight with no tension at all.

To make matters worse, three of the tuners screws snapped off. Two were already gone and the third occurred as soon as I tried to remove it... little patience and some good pliers, I was able to remove all but one; it broke off way too deep. It was flush to the headstock and did not interfere with the new tuners.

Purchased Fender 70’s style tuners; lucky for me they were just drop in. No mods required. I was rather surprised how easy it was and how much improvement there was in tuning the guitar.

I'm pleased you've sorted your problem :)

With description of what you found taking off the Schallers it's no surprise you had tuning issues.
If they'd been fitted properly you'd have left them on.

I might of replaced them anyway and use the Schallers on another project. They are so warped, the aren't much use to anyone.

"Helpful Hint" - when removing screws and nails from wood, bolts, (even steel picket fence posts that have been driven into the ground), especially if they have been in place for a considerable time, it makes removal easier to drive/screw them ever so slightly tighter to break the holding bond then remove in the normal manner. Otherwise the removal requires much more force and breakage can often occur.
Hope this helps, Ross
