Ok so a couple years ago I bought a Strat from a family friend, but I never really gave it any attention until about a year ago. I’ve done some research on it and found out that it was made in 1997 in Mexico. It’s a deluxe series. I’m new to playing so I don’t know much about it. But one day I wasn’t playing and it started sounding off. Almost like the pick ups weren’t working at all. So I brought it to a local guitar shop and the worker (who has been fixing guitars for over 30 years) found out that it was made with active pick ups. Even he said that he has never seen a fender Strat with active pick ups in his entire life. I’m not looking to sell or anything, I’m looking for more information on it, like the rarety and all that. Thanks!

Well, some pics might make ID'ing a lot easier...

But I'll throw in a wild guess that your guitar is a Powerhouse Stratocaster, MIM Deluxe series, model number 0139500/9502.
You can check if it fits with the Powerhouse Strat Service Diagram 2001
The specs, if that's the right one, are here: https://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?t=33361

Hmmm... Passive Fenders are of course the majority, so it may be just happenstance that he's never (taken literally) seen an active Strat. But if he wasn't even aware of them, that's weird. Unless he's an oldschool craftsman type guitar tech.

The pickups are passive. Only the circuit boosting the signal from the pickups is active and requires a battery.

Once the battery dies the circuit stops working.

Installing a DPDT switch will bypass the preamp for normal passive operation. This feature is handy when you're out of batteries in the middle of a performance.

Nonetheless you should always remove the cable from the guitar after playing as the plug turns on the circuit causing the battery to drain fast. Therefore it's strongly recommended to use a stereo cable to prevent battery suckage.

Tip: You can clip two resistors in the boost pot for maximum gain (Clapton mod).

That's assuming this is indeed a Powerhouse Strat.

Lots of people have put active EMG's into MIM Strats. Without pics or more details there's no way to know if it's factory-stock or an aftermarket mod.

Right. But I threw in my guess because the battery (compartment/cover/routing) system on aftermarket actives often looks just that, so I assumed this one looks like a stock model...

Anyways, a follow-up from DertyLuke would be nice - mystery solved or more help needed?

Later MIM Powerhouses came with a more efficient compartment box making battery changes a breeze.

EMGs feature Quick Connect solderless connectors making installation a breeze.

Fender made solderless pickups for a while but this move was shortlived.
