hello,

i bought some "fender stratocaster standard x0's pickups" some years ago. (guessing they were 80's / a cheaper decade).

but i have no idea really if they are even fender ? - can anyone, who knows; please have a look and give me any possible identification please ?.

(they look well-made with waxed (?) tape coil, neck yellow 52mm end to end spacing, middle red 55mm, bridge blue 57mm.)

they sound crunchy and warm with quite low (thin) output although a little noisy (i have just had them on a plywood guitar though).

thankyou if for any possible ID help ?!!.

regards.

Hello!
Please pick up the pick-up resistance! (This is one of its characteristic features.)

I have no firsthand knowledge of Squier pickups but they do not appear to be Genuine Fender MIA or MIM pickups.
The black bottom plate would not have that depression area in any past or current MIA pup that I have ever seen.
There are a couple of other things that also seem suspect as well.
The lead connections and the foam or rubber strip look to be out of the ordinary.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

thanks!.

sorry i was too lazy to get the multimeter out / re-solder ...not doing if "they don't even look like fender" ? ("f@@king ebay...").

sorry, the backs are ceramic (?) with tape residue on them, i think maybe someone sold me squiers (/replica) or something in that case (i tried scouring for fender blue red yellow wire combo to no avail), just confusing they looked pretty beat ("vintage") when i got them, sold as... some years ago.

..."the old cheap ceramic pickups sound better then the modern day cheap ceramic pickups imho" - i can say now, to sound like i know more then i do... ("every cloud")

(i just bought an epiphone sl... was going to dump them in but going to go for lipsticks now...).

thankyou for the help!.

That pickup appears to be MIM or a Squier. The magnet on the back versus the actual pole pieces being magnets is the difference. Real Fender? Maybe, but certainly not US Made.

Maybe Squier.
The bobbins aren't like any MIM I've seen... and even the heavy wires coming out from under the tape makes me scratch my head.

But the good news is, if they sound good to you it doesn't matter.

thankyou!,

i think i like them... / because i measured them at 6kohm each ? ( a "generic wound 6k single coil from guessing 90s (???), as pictured (if helps, thankyou / sorry for being lazy).

...would be happy with "MIM" ....or "MIC" etc

- does anybody know please; if i attach a 1kohm .25w resistor to a 7kohm pickup, if it's output will be 6kohm ?

thanks for the help.

No man the pickup value will remain the same you will just be adding more resistance to the circuit kinda like using the volume control.
As a result you will get an overall lower output than with just the 7k pickup. Resistance is just one factor in a pickup. :D

thankyou!.

i was thinking "do i need the 1k to minus, or the 6k to take value...." (...i told you idiot).

- is there any other way, you know (by way of "cheap part") to limit the pickups output by -1kohm, or would have to de-coil / snip the copper wind at appropriate length ?

thankyou!

Hi there I am not sure what you are trying to achieve.
is it just a reduction of output of one pickup in a group?
You could just lower the higher output one or use that in the lead position for blistering solos

There is a difference between inductive and resistive loads.
A resistor is just that... it is like pinching a garden hose.
A pickup is an inductive load, or more accurately, an AC generator. As the string passes back and forth through the magnetic field, it generates a potential voltage in the pickup coil.
More magnetism or more wire in the coil equals higher output of this "generator"
A resistor will actually reduce this output.

You could increase the output by adding more wire to the coil, but it would be easier to disassemble and rewind the pickup... it would be even easier to buy a new one

thankyou !.

(i was intending on taking off some brightness of a p90 alnico 5 - reducing from 7.5kohm to ~6k...) - no resistor shopping for me in that case, thankyou - i will use the volume knob instead...)

- would any of you guys reccommend wax potting ?

if i "bought the right stuff", then i wouldn't get the free education! - thankyou!! (learnding is fun!).
