Hello guys, I'm a pretty new guitarist and I don't really have a lot of experience, I'm looking to buy my first fender guitar but I have no clue if this one is real or fake, I've tried looking up the serial number and it doesn't show up, wondering if that is a 100% sign it is fake?

The owner states that this is a MIJ 62' Fender, what do you guys think?

Any help and education is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

I'd like to see the neck pocket/heel stamps and the electronics, but in general it looks OK.
It looks like it's been played hard, and the perspectice in the last pic is weird...
How's the price level compared to "absolutely surely legit" MIJ's?
(As a side note, if you're not familiar with how to check a legit Fender, stay on the sure side and avoid anything questionable.)

For a 1996ish guitar, you could check the serial with Fender Consumer Relations (via the support pages).

Most assuredly a fake.

Wrong tuners for a vintage-spec Strat.

Incorrectly-located string tree.

Incorrect neck-plate screws.

Incorrect asian-spec bridge with narrow string spacing.

Incorrect trem cover.

Incorrect pickguard for a '62 model.

Incorrect 12th fret dot spacing.

Arjay

I agree 100%.

While there aren't the obvious "not Fender" indicators, because MiJ 60's guitars are such a good reproduction you can use the "Well that is wrong for a 60's" as a reference.

There seems to be a chip and dent in the headstock where one of the machine heads was changed but no screw holes on the rear which would indicate it originally had vintage style tuners.

All the other points as made by Arjay, but as JM notes I couldn't say it isn't a Fender of some sort.

The neck does bother me though. The cap seems very thick and I would expect to see an indication of the truss rod nut above the pick guard.

Of the incorrect list you could also add:-

Incorrect jack plate screws

Possible incorrect jack plate (the screws make it difficult to tell)

Incorrect PUP mounting screws - the heads seem too small to me. They are c/sk which would be correct for 60's but look small. The guard is confusing.

The neck has a different nut and should have clay not pearloid markers on a 60's.

All in all very strange.

All that, plus the lower horn is oddly shaped. Definitely not a Fender body. Sorry to say, OP, but it ain't the real McCoy.
