Does anyone know the tonal differences (if any) between a strat body that is one solid tone wood piece, a strat body that is made of two glued together tone wood planks, and a strat body that is made of three glued together tone wook planks? I have two new american standard strats, both made in 2008. One has a three piece body and the other a two piece body. How do the luthiers decide which to use for a particular model? Is it just a mater of cosmetics and aesthetic appeal based on an individual basis or is there more scientific reasoning for these differences? If anyone out there has a good explanation, I'd like to hear about it. Thanks!

I thought that the MIA ones were made from one piece of wood, and the MIM were two or more planks. I could be wrong though if you think your American Strat is made of more than one piece.

Your sienna sunburst american standard strat may in fact be a one solid piece, which is typical for guitars that have a translucent finish. My two strats are three tone sunbursts and not completely translucent. This brings me to another question. One strat came in a case with a little green sticker that said 36% and has a fairly thick black outline along the edges of the sunburst. The other strat came in a case with a little green sticker that said 31% and had a thinner black outline along the edges of the sunburst. Is there any connection between the amount of black on the sunburst and the percentages on the sticker, or is it just my imagination gone wild?

I am not sure this answers your question, but I am almost positive that the MIM Standard Strats were made of 5-piece alder bodies up to 2005. For 2006+, they are made of 3-piece alder bodies -- which is also true of MIA American Standards.

Don't flame me if this incorrect. It is just to the best of my knowledge... :o

Most guitars today, even the sienna & the sunbursts are 3 pieces...
Like I said most...
I have been told that there is a subtle tone/resonance difference.
Although, to say if it is better or not I believe is in the eye of the beholder.
As has been said 1 million times in here...
Each guitar is different...
One of the main differences is the fact that it is a different piece of wood.
Literally different trees, meaning density, weight, & many other factors vary from tree to tree.
Somewhere within all these factors of variation the answer becomes an opinion... not fact.
... but that's just my opinion, others may disagree.

My amber Highway One has a four piece body. But it's very well matched. You have to look closely to see the 2nd seam and look extremely closely to see the 3rd seam.

One piece bodies are used on Custom Shop and special editions, not usually on regular production models, though I suppose they could slip through as they have throughout the history of Strats.

The typical number of pieces on MIA and MIM seem to change according to wood supplies and vendor ...

That said, I don't think it matters much to the sound ... twisting a knob on your amp has a much bigger sonic effect. IMO.

Wow, this I didn't know. I thought solid provides better tone, but guess not.
