In this instance I think Maple looks the best.

Given the choice (not all Strat Series have both) I also prefer the feel of Maple. I can't comment on the sound as I'm not aware of a difference personally.

I also find Maple to be a bit more practical as it seems less influenced by changes in weather - perhaps because it is encased in lacquer rather than exposed as is Rosewood, PF etc.

While appreciating the reason for the change I have yet to see a PF neck that I think looks really good. It just looks a bit orange and anaemic to me.

In this case maple makes too much contrast, so I voted pau ferro. I think maple looks great on guitars with lighter colors, but that brownburst is too dark.

Maple looks better on 2-colour burst/ash.

Rosewood is best suited for 3-colour burst/alder.

Totally agree. It just looks right. Some of the rosewood I'm seeing on new guitars is light in color and streaky. Those don't look so good. My 2014 is slightly lighter than my once owned '66 which had dark Brazilian rosewood.

Dave Gilmore might disagree with you on that.
I’ve seen black Strats with rosewood boards and I think the contrast of the maple looks better.
That said, I do prefer the feel of rosewood.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Dave had put a '63 rosewood neck on his black Strat for some time in the 1970s.

In 1977 the original white pickguard has been exchanged for a matte black replacement and a DiMarzio FS-1 was put in the bridge position.

Blame the greenies and the fed for that.
MIA models use actual Rosewood, but for some reason (and it only seems to impact Fender and Gibson), import models are made with Pau Ferro, which is what you see in the examples above.
It has to do with import restrictions, I don't know the details... and for all I know, it may not be possible to import ANY Rosewood and what we see on MIA necks may be grown domestically, or it may be from stock that was imported over the last 30 years.

The restrictions result from a new CITES policy protecting wood species from extinction.

Many major guitar manufacturing companies such as Ibanez, Yamaha and ESP stopped using rosewood on some models.

The Meshuggah Stoneman for example employs a jatoba fingerboard.
