I'm a beginner on guitar (6 months), but I (and my wife) have an interest/attraction for the blues, so I got the Blues You Can Use and the Hal-Leonard Blues Guitar. The Hal-Leonard music stays with the open scales, which was better for me in terms of getting fingering practice at the top of the neck. The BYCU book is more about traveling scales and chords, and I think it would be better for a more experienced player than I. I've enjoyed playing out of both books.

For staying on the cheap, I would recommend going to your local library and checking out all the blues instructional books they have. Once you've played / looked through them a little bit, you'll have an idea of which one will work best for you. Worst case you're out nothing and you might pick up a few good ideas!
