A couple days ago I found and purchased an MIM Strat from a local pawn shop. Whoever previously owned it had "painted" the fret numbers down the neck to the 13th fret. Not sure what type "paint" was used, and seeking recommendations as to a method or what might be used to safely remove the "paint" without damaging the neck finish.

Try some Goo-Gone. It will not harm the poly finish whatsoever. Failing that, mild lacquer reducer will probably do the trick.

Testors Lacquer (purple label, round bottle, about three bucks) is very mild and available at most hobby stores. Apply with a Q-tip.

I was able to remove the numbers using my wife's finger nail polish, "Lacquer Remover" (contains acetone). I was somewhat reluctant, but proceeded applying it cautiously, using a Q-tip, on one spot at first. I did not see any affect to the fret board or neck finish.

Thanks again for the advice.

Glad you've sorted it!

But I had to laugh! Reminds me of my dodgy keyboard skills. When I needed piano or organ etc on recordings I used to stick little bits (different colours) of insulating tape on the required keys, so I could hit the right ones! I haven't improved much, but Tascam editing has...!

The previous owner of your Strat obviously had a very similar idea! Fantastic!

Cheers - Peter.

Guessing your right. Went to a bit of trouble to carefully paint the numbers as clearly as they were. But, a matter of inconvenience to undo his/her work. Much better without IMO.... :D

It was an ArtLine Paint Pen.
I use them enough to know what the inconsistent lines and streaks look like.
The easiest way to remove paint pen is to apply more paint pen over top of the original writing.
The new paint will soften the old paint and it pretty much just wipes off.
A couple tries might be necessary if the old paint is over a year old.

Like Arjay said, Goo Gone works too.
It's my go to wonder cure for tons of stuff.
It leaves a greasy film but that is easily cleaned up with mild sudsy water and a cloth.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks for the info, though, I was able to remove the paint as noted previously.
