Did you go back to the shop or get in touch with the online seller and ask for the right tag?

Is the serial on the tag wrong as well?
If so you have the wrong tag completely. Talk to the shop you bought it from.
Is it new .. then they may have the correct tag somewhere. :D

Careful.
Check first.
Maybe you got a better deal on the price.

Very solid advice. It could go either way so best establish where you might be first.

Am I missing something here?

If you ordered a Jazzmaster and received a Jazzmaster does it really matter what a slip of paper you're going to throw out says?

If you can't tell a Jazzmaster from a Strat that's a whole different story

People sometimes keep hang tags to "prove" what the guitar is.
Apparently, it's particularly useful when it comes time to sell. (not my words, just what I've read)
It is said to lend more credibility to the seller.
Obviously, not the same thing as a COA but it is supposed to have a similar affect on the mind of the prospective buyer.

I don't know if this is the reason the OP wants the tag.

^^ Funny comment.

While the hang tag is in reality pretty unimportant to me personally, I do agree that having all the proper "case candy" and sales documentation can help the re-sale process. I get that. Further, as many of us have emotional attachments to guitar purchases, one may just want all the proper paperwork. I fully get that too. A guitar purchase can be a much more "emotional" than say an equally costly $1500 Air Conditioning system from Home Depot.

Come on, guys.

It is important to keep the tags and papers, especially if you might sell the guitar later on. It helps proving that you bought the guitar new and from a legal/authorized dealer.

Many buyers care about that...

I agree entirely that it is good to keep the hang tags and case candy in pristine condition, should you ever wish to sell the guitar it will add confidence.

My only reservation above was in respect of; if the wrong hang tag was attached did the OP pay less for a more expensive guitar? I think the buyer should be pretty solid though as (in accordance with English law) the buyer makes "An offer to treat" and the seller accepts that offer. The price tag isn't legally enforceable as such.

Based on this assumption I would contact the shop and request the correct hang tag. (Legal procedures may differ in other counties).

US is a bit different. Basically, the shop pays for their mistakes if the buyer has his wits about him and has the desire to pursue. $700 hang-tag on a $1400 guitar, the shop will most likely eat it. $1400 tag on a $700 guitar... nobody will buy it, it will eventually be noticed... or some kid with more money than brains will buy it because it's just like the one that Mick Mars plays.

I was trying out a brand new Classic Player Jazzmaster in my local music shop last week (just out of interest, you understand...) and that had a Strat hang-tag, too.
