Saw ECs Cream reunion concert at Albert from 2005 and a show he played in San Diego in 2007on Axs TV and noticed how much he used the middle PUP. I’ve always been partial to the neck and bridge but played some songs with the middle and was REALLY digging the tones ! Very glassy and warm. The mid boost paired really all with it (of course). Did EC use the middle PUP in his earlier years ? I would think he’s doing more recently by of the mid boost.

EC used the middle pickup quite a bit during Derek & The Dominos. I have seen him use it in the mid 70's in concert as well.

Pickup positions depend the songs he plays.

In the early 1990s he mostly used the neck pickup with the mid boost cranked and the TBX rolled off.

All the videos I have seen (1990s 24 Nights etc.) suggest position 4 & 5 as favourite and, as such, became the default position for my Strat. He also seemed to play with the tone control quite a lot.

Lighter gauge strings (9-42) were an important recipe for his signature tones from that era. Clapton switched to 10-46s in late 1993/early 1994.
