Hi all

I have a 1999 Lonestar Strat which I bought new on a whim here in the UK back in 2000 or so. By the time it got to me the neck was all over the place, so intonation was off and the action was horrible, and I never got it properly set up, hence never really liked playing it, though it makes good sounds. A year or so ago I decided to sort it out, got it professionally set up, and it's been a much better experience since then.

However, the tuners are horrible to use.. Mainly because of the amount of 'give' before they properly engage with the string. Are the tuners actually a bit rubbish, or is there an adjustment I should make to get them working properly? And if the former, what's the best upgrade /replacement?

Grateful for any advice from the Fender experts out there.

Cathal

The original tuners should be fine, they certainly won't be worn out. Perhaps try restringing with fewer windings and make sure the strings are spooling cleanly onto the post?

Yes, they work great. Just a pity they're made in Taiwan. (Yes, I'm on my hobby horse again!)

Or you can get Sperzels, made in the USA, but they do need a hole (for each tuner) drilled in the headstock. Correctly drilled, if you sell the guitar and change the tuners back, those holes won't show. These tuners don't work any better than the 'F' logo'd but they are a bit nicer made. No rough edges on the Sperzels, and American tuners for an American guitar!

Having said all that, the standard non-lockers should be OK on a '99 unless they've seen a LOT of action. Are you winding the strings on as recommended, I wonder?

Cheers - Peter.

Thanks for the replies all. I went back and had a proper look, and the answer to my main issue was basically that the peg screws were too loose.

That said, the tuners don't hold for as long or as well as some of my other guitars, and I wondered about getting some locking tuners for it. I'm not fussed about where they are made, long as they work! But those fender ones pointed to above look solid, and I've had the opportunity to check out a couple of videos of them, so thanks again for the advice.
