You see, I used to be a 100% strat man. I had my two strats, both SSS, and sometimes I felt that I needed some more mid range and bulk in my tone.

Many people would tell me then that I should throw a Seymour Duncan JB or even a Gibson PAF in on the bridge of one of them. I never agreed, I am a purist and modding an SSS strat to me is like defiling an altar. It's a no no thing.

So I did the best thing I could: I bought myself a Gibson SG, which served me well and is just about to be happily traded for an American Standard Telecaster, stock, this week, for entirely personal reasons but mainly because I am a Fender player and can't seem to "fit" with a Gibson. Go figure.

But anyway, a humbucker on a stratocaster, while ain't "wrong", just won't EVER give you that "stratty" tone you are used to by listening to classic strat songs.

OTOH, someone who believed that he was channeling the spirit of Hendrix, but couldn't quite fit into a Fender....

Humbuckers - especially in the bridge position - had their pros and cons.

The pros: they're useful for lead solos as there's no need switching instruments between songs.

The cons: you lose the chime and quack associated with single coils.

With an HSS setup you can have the best of both worlds.

I have to say, if you want the Edge's sound, you shouldn't have got an HSS! If you don't know, the '73 Strat (black with a black pickguard) on which Edge played/wrote those classic tunes (Gloria, Bad, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Streets, etc.) was SSS, but it had a DiMarzio FS-1 in the bridge position. By the way, this is the same setup that the Edge Signature Strat has. My model is a fantastic guitar, and it's SO easy to copy the Edge's tone, if I'm in the mood (especially since I got that Vox amp...).

Indeed, HSS are a joker. They will cover a lot of ground... Problem is, they are more versatile than an Ace of Spades; but they'll never be the real McCoy Ace of Spades.

Fender didn't offer Strats with humbuckers until the mid-1980s.
