Well, I'm getting a Classic Player 50s Strat soon, and I want to know how easy it is to swap out the 'aged' parts, cause I don't like them. I know the parts are cheap, I just need to know how you do it without breaking the guitar!

It's relatively easy.

You'll need two teaspoons and a good philips head screwdriver.

Place the two spoons under the edges of the knobs on opposite sides and simply lift them gently by applying even pressure to the ends of the spoons.

The toggle switch cover pops right off... no tool needed.

Now, to remove the pup covers will require that you remove the strings and pickguard. This is the most complicated step, but even this is relatively simple if you are at all familiar with hand tools.

After removing the strings remove each pickguard screw. Carefully lift the pickguard away from the guitar top. You should be able to raise it into position without having to detach the pots or switch itself. If you do find it necessary it's only a matter of loosening two additional screws (for the switch), and three nuts (one for each pot).

Proceed by loosening the pup cover screws all the way. The pups will fall away from the pickguard and allow you to remove the covers.

Now it's just a matter of putting your new covers in place and reversing the entire process. The entire job should take no more than an hour from start to finish. Hope this helps.

Very simple to do - all you need is a phillips head screwdriver. Gently pry off the volume and tone caps (they are friction fit and come straight off). Replace with the new knobs (push on). Slack or remove strings, unscrew the pickguard and lift away from body. Unscrew each pickup (one at a time). When coil is free, pull off the plastic cover, replace with new one. Do everything in reverse to re-assemble. No more than 10 minutes tops.

Ten minutes! It takes AT LEAST ten minutes just to re-string a guitar... and that's if you're a pro that's done it a million times. This guy's obviously a newbie. First rule of thumb... you should be doing this in your SPARE time. So take your time and do it right. It will show in the end result... and you might just learn a few extra things about your guitar along the way. PEACE!

1) I'm not a newbie - I've been playing for over twenty years and have BUILT my last three guitars. 2) You do not have to restring the guitar to lift the pickguard away from the body... it's simply removing/replacing screws. 3) If you find this to be a challenge to your skill-set then so be it...but I do this fairly regularly. Moreover, there is no need to try and put someone else down in an attempt to try and make yourself look superior - when indeed it seems you may actually be impaired. 8)

Well said, I've been there and done that too.

Bob, I wasn't referring to you as being a newbie. I was referring to the person who originally opened the topic. And I would love to see you try to swap out pup covers without removing the strings. I could use a good laugh. Craig

Fair enough if I misunderstood. However, I still stand behind being able to slack all the strings with a $2.00 winder and being able to get my hand under the pickguard to lift it enough for a coil cover changeout. Speed is not important...by all means take your time.
