Hey there, everyone :)

I've recently bought a used Made in Korea Fender Strat and I'm in the middle of doing a refret, but I seem to have issues with the truss rod.. Atleast I think so..

Under string tension I seem to have no problem operating the rod, but after pulling the frets, and wanting to adjust the neck straight, I can't really straighten out the neck.. With my straight-edge on the fretboard the neck has a slight backbow.. I tried, very carefully, to apply a little pressure with my hands, to bend the neck, and that seemed to straighten it, but as I did it again, it made the backbow come back.. And so it continues, when I apply the hand pressure..

Anyone here know a reason?

P.S. I've done several refrets, know how to properly set-up a guitar, etc. so no first-timer here :)

Cheer & thanks.

Ya, the Squier necks do not have the bi-flex truss rod, so the best you can do if you have excessive back-bow is loosen the rod all the way and see if the neck relaxes over a few days.

Try loosening the rod and stringing it up with heavy-gauge strings, let it sit for a week or so and see if that pulls the bow out.

Depending on which model you have, some Korean Strats have a very bendy neck - but all I know have a one-way truss rod.
When wood takes it's natural shape (here: the backbow), it fights all corrections.
Either of the above mentioned pressure bend and/or heat system or stringing it with heavier gauge strings & a loose truss rod could keep the neck straight long enough to do the fret job, which might be enough for this guitar.

The long term solution is to take the old frets off, sand-till-straight, reslot, refret, (reinlay), refinish the fretboard. Worth considering if it were a MIK Lite Ash Strat; on a MIK Squier I'd just get a new neck.

Oh yeah, I recall some previous forum conversations - you're a 'can-do, let's roll, think later' person - which is not an offence, since I confess being one myself.
Still, a fret job on a neck that's not straight is one of the most difficult ones. You sort of need to have a mental-PLEK-inside-your-head of what the neck will be with the strings on and relief adjusted. The thing to avoid is shaving the middle section frets too low, on the other hand a little fallaway in the high end won't hurt. But don't be surprised if you need to do some parts of the neck again (and again) (and again).

As far as I know, the neck hasn't been stored without strings...
It's just strange, I had the truss rod working, with strings on, adjusting the relief..

Squier necks?? The Strat I have has Fender stamped on the headstock??

Hmm, don't know if I've explained myself correctly..
At first the neck had a back-bow, then I applied some gentle hand-pressure, trying to get the neck straight, which it is now, but I was just wondering if that was strange? Being able to hand-pressure it back to straight?

Guess I'll have to check on it later and see if it has moved..

BTW, please remember that a guitar isn't always what it says on the headstock.
There were Korean Fenders in that 87/88 era, but they're quite rarely seen. So, a series of pics would be nice.
Is the serial number in silver or in black?
