Thanks everyone for the help. I decided to pass on it. Too much mystery and even if it was real it wasnt in good enough condition for the price he wanted. I ended up just putting a used american std on layaway at guitar center.

Good decision, and thanks for the follow up.

Weird thing is the seller and guitar appeared to be in a guitar store in the lousy pics. Pretty sketchy.

Yeah it was a 'guitar store' if you could call it that. Place called Hayes house of music in Topeka, KS. He was really nice about it and refunded my money i had given him to hold the instrument for me. After scrutinizing it a little more he told me he bought it from a guy who got it on a garage sale. And the story behind the pictures is I had my dad pop in and take a few while I was at work, so thats what I had to work with haha. Crazy thing is he IS advertising it as an american std for close to 800 bucks. When GC is selling me a (more than likely) legit used one in far better shape for roughly the same price and they have a 30 day return policy. The guy at hayes house of music did try to give me some grief and tell me he had been doing this for 50 some years etc etc and you cant trust everything you read on the internet. I just thanked him and took my money :)

Well, in fairness to the guy, I'd say (as did the Fender Serial Nº search) that is what it is.

I don't know about values in the States but, based on my £=$ rule of thumb, while he wasn't doing you any favours he probably wasn't doing you over either.

It all comes down to how nicely it plays at the end of the day. It is a post CBS guitar so could easily gain classic status within a few years and may prove more desirable than most of the guitars produced in the 70's and early 80's.

The guy who picked it up at the garage sale may end up kicking himself for letting it go....as may you.
