Back on topic: Flying V's are "dark" sounding?

Albert King and SRV:

(OK, that's a Mark Erlewine Flying V not a Gibson, but Albert always had a pretty bright tone even with his Gibson V's.)

This amp is not a Two Rock amps I'm talking about. I understand you don't know Two Rock amps made by hand in California.
It was a joke... you said to get a "Two Rock" amp and I posted a "Rock" amp (made in Pomona, CA, in the late 70s).
I was agreeing with you that OP is not going to make his Strat sound like a Flying-V

Yes, I know what a "Two Rock" amp is and where they are made.... about 450 miles north of Pomona.

Ya, on the differences, I never particularly felt that the Flying-V, or the LP, or any other humbucker-equipped guitar, in and of itself, was particularly "dark" sounding.
They tend to be more "full", where single coil equipped guitars tend to be more thin, in general, but I wouldn't really call it a "darkness"... That has more to do with strings, tuning, pickup design itself, and the amplifier EQ.

String up a Strat dropped 1/2 step and to Drop-C with some Duncan Quarter Pounders into a JCM900 and you'll get all the "dark" you want.
It still won't sound just like a Les Paul or Flying-V because the differences in the bridge hardware impact sustain and the tone, but it will be dark.

Very interesting video to watch and compare the tone.
Again, Albert's tone is very different from Stevie's, but look at where his right hand is, over the neck pickup, and it appears that he is not using a pick.
This is also a key aspect in Mark Knopfler's tone on most of his work.

Try Two Rock amps, tone is dark.

I had one... not sure a 2nd one would help make a Strat sound different....

The pot resistance is a major factor for a pickup to sound darker (or brighter, depending the tastes).

Here's a good article for reference:

Cheers.

How do you get a dark tone from a Fender Stratocaster HSS with just the Equalizer on the Amp? Also I’m not planning on modifying my guitar. What Equalizer setting would you recommend for a tone similar to a Gibson Flying V. It doesn’t have to sound exactly the same.

One of the control pots maybe the culprit.
