You'll find this discussion at length on another thread but the gist is that the pickups are designed such that the midrange frequencies are 'scooped out' with an emphasis on the highs and lows.

Doc

Followup:

There's another current thread on JM which will lead you to a link on which you will find a narrative detailing why and how the pickups were created.

Sorry, I don't have it at my fingertips at this writing, but it's current.

Thanks for this. There's also a second link around which contains within it a narrartive on his guitars which explains how them came to choosing the number of windings for these pickups.

My Mayer signature has a different tone than my 62 reissue however I think it still has that Fender sound. The Mayer is stronger on the low end frequencies but I don't think the high are that over the top. If I didn't have by 62 reissue to A/B them I don't know if it would be that big of deal.

The Mayer pickups are only slightly different from the SRV/Texas Special pickups from what I've collected. Mayer's SRV sig had pickups that were wound differently and they used that basis for the Big Dippers.
